Job summary

We are looking to recruit 2 Trainee Advanced Critical Care Practitioners.

One for the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit, which provide care to 1400 patients per year who are admitted following Cardiac and complex Thoracic Surgery, Cardiology procedure/Out of Hospital Arrest/Heart Failure/Heart Lung Transplant and Respiratory and Cardiac ECMO patients.

One for the Adults Critical Care Units at Oxford Road Campus, which is provides care to General Surgical/Medical and Renal transplant specialty patients.

Successful applicants will follow a 2 year and 1 semester apprenticeship program including study at Master's level commencing September 2025. Salford University is the preferred HEI as the program is aligned to FICM standards and incorporates the non-medical prescribing course which is essential for these posts.

Following successful completion of the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and training linked to FICM standards, trainees will progress to Advanced Critical Care Practitioner at Band 8a and function at junior doctor level on the medical trainee critical care rota.

You must have substantial experience in your field and be able to demonstrate ability and motivation to study at MSc level.

To meet the requirements of the Apprenticeship scheme, applicants must have Maths and English GCSE at grade C or above or Key Skills L2.

Main duties of the job
The aim of the ACCP program is to develop an autonomous practitioner working in a new role within the Critical Care Units. Core skills will include patient assessment, appropriate ordering and interpretation of investigations, procedural skills including line insertion and discharge to the ward.

The ACCP will play a key role in providing care to our patients and will be expected to work closely with the consultant team to drive standards of care and innovation, supporting education, research and audit and developing practice.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

What is a DBS Check?
A DBS check is a background check that reveals any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands, or warnings. The level of check required depends on the role:

Standard DBS: Checks for spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings.
Enhanced DBS: Includes the above, plus any additional information held by local police thats considered relevant to the role.
Enhanced with Barred Lists: Includes all of the above, plus checks against the childrens and/or adults barred lists.

Who Needs a DBS Check

The Costs for a DBS
At Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), roles that require a DBS check are subject to a cost recovery policy. This means that the cost of submitting and processing a DBS application if you are successful and join us, will be deducted from your salary within the first three months of employment. If, however, you withdraw from a conditional offer after the DBS process has begun, you will still be liable for the cost incurred.

Qualifications
Essential
  • First Level Registered Nurse/Professional with UK registration
  • First Degree
  • Post Registration Critical Care Course or equivalent
  • GCSE English and Maths at Grade C or Key Skills Level 2

Desirable
  • Non-medical Prescribing Course
  • Advanced Life Support course

Experience and Knowledge
Essential
  • Significant and current experience in field, at senior level including managing and leading teams
  • Ability to demonstrate specialist expertise underpinned by theory through CPD
  • Evidence of involvement in the development of programs of care, protocols and guidelines
  • Knowledge of Clinical risk management and Governance
  • Excellent clinical reasoning /clinical decision making skills
