Job summary
This post is for a whole-time Resident Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

This post is designed to improve the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Service in St Helens & Knowsley, and to share the general workload with the other Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

The successful candidate will join a team of 19 Consultants within the directorate who currently provide services for General Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Feto-maternal Medicine, Urogynaecology, Menstrual disorders, Menopause, Subfertility, Outpatient hysteroscopy, and Gynaecological Oncology.

Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists (UK or equivalent qualifications), to be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and to be on the Specialist Register or due to obtain their CCT within six months of the date of interview. CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation of successful application.

Interviews will take place on Tuesday 3rd November 2026.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will join a team of 19 Consultants within the directorate who currently provide services for General Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Feto-maternal Medicine, Urogynaecology, Menstrual disorders, Menopause, Subfertility, Outpatient hysteroscopy, and Gynaecological Oncology.

This is a Resident on call post to help towards maintaining full activity within gynaecology and obstetrics. The appointee will share the general workload with the other Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. The successful candidates will join a team of senior medical and midwifery/nursing staff committed to providing a high-quality service. The new consultant will join the existing Consultants and middle grade staff in delivering a high-quality 24-hour service.

The successful candidate will be expected to take clinical lead in an area of special interest which will complement those that already exist within the department as well as contribute towards 60 hours Consultant presence on the labour ward.

  • Acute Care - Providing emergency and maternity services at Whiston, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, and medical and surgical specialties across all our sites.
  • Primary Care - Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital.
  • Community Services - Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.
  • Specialist Regional Services - We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Full GMC registration at the time of application
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP or equivalent medical qualification
  • MD/PHD or equivalent medical qualification
  • Further Higher degree

Knowledge
Essential
  • Evidence of achievement of competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards/Good Medical Practice including: o Good clinical care o Maintaining good medical practice o Good relationships and communication with o Good working relationships with colleagues o Good teaching and training o Professional behaviour and probity o Delivery of good acute clinical care

Skills
Essential
  • Demonstrate skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Demonstrates the necessary range, depth and breadth of competencies specified in the General Obstetrics & Gynaecology curriculum and applying to this post
  • RCOG ATSM or equivalent and demonstrable experience including that relating to a special interest to complement existing colleagues e.g., Advanced Labour ward practice ATSM plus any of following: High Risk pregnancy ATSM or Obstetric Medicine ATSM or Fetal Medicine ATSM or Urogynaecology & vaginal surgery ATSM or Subfertility & reproductive health ATSM or Benign abdominal surgery: open & laparoscopic ATSM or Acute gynaecology and early pregnancy ATSM or Menopause ATSM or Hysteroscopy ATSM or Colposcopy ATSM or Vulvar disease ATSM or Labour ward lead ATSM.
  • Demonstrable experience to manage a Labour Ward independently
  • Knowledge and experience to participate on the Consultant on call rota
  • Demonstrates ability to undertake robust audit / research within team structure within the last 3 years.
  • Evidence of appropriate teaching experience within the last 3 years
  • Demonstrates clarity in written/spoken communication & capacity to adapt language as appropriate to the situation
  • Able to build rapport, listen, persuade & negotiate
  • Capacity to use logical/lateral thinking to solve problems/make decisions
  • Capacity to work effectively with others.
  • Able to work in multi-professional teams
  • Able to supervise junior medical staff
