Job summaryWe are seeking motivated & ambitious ST5+ Clinical Fellows in Anaesthetics to join our structured CESR Portfolio Pathway Programme, delivered in partnership between Mid and South Essex Hospitals NHS Trust (MSE), Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT).
This is a unique opportunity for non-training grade anaesthetists who are committed to achieving Specialist Registration via the Portfolio Pathway route, with a clearly defined rotational structure and excellent access to SIAs, specialty modules, and consultant-level supervision.
The Department of Anaesthetics provides anaesthetics, pain services, pre-operative preparation & emergency services to Broomfield Hospital and Braintree Community Hospital. The Department is under the Care Group - Theatres, Anaesthetics and Critical Care across MSE, has one Clinical Director & several lead Clinicians for different sub-specialties including Burns, Obstetrics, Pain, Paediatrics, Difficult Airway and Pre- assessment. We provide anaesthetics services to 22 theatres; 3 day stay units, Burns theatres on the Burns ICU, Maternity with 2 designated theatres & labour ward, radiology for MRI scans & interventions, cardioversions in cardiac suite. We also provide anaesthetic services to 2 theatres at Braintree Community Hospital which offer elective orthopaedic surgery.
Main duties of the jobBe responsible for providing high-quality anaesthetic and perioperative care across a broad spectrum of clinical specialties. Your daily routine will involve active participation in theatre lists, providing essential emergency cover & supporting critical care duties. A core focus of this role is professional advancement via the CESR (Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration) pathway, requiring you to maintain meticulous portfolio evidence and engage fully in Specialist Interest Area (SIA) modules under consultant supervision. Beyond clinical tasks, you will be expected to contribute to the department's educational culture by attending teaching sessions, workshops, and simulation training. Play a key role in departmental safety & evolution through involvement in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and clinical governance, while fulfilling service requirements by contributing to the local on-call rotas.
Based mainly in Broomfield Hospital covering all theatres and remote site but will also include the opportunity to cover elective orthopaedic work at Braintree Community Hospital. The on calls will predominantly cover maternity theatres/labour ward, plastics trauma and a senior anaesthetist (1330) tier. There will be an opportunity to rotate onto the Burns ITU and General ITU rota as well.

Qualifications
Essential- MBBS or equivalent
- FRCA or equivalent qualification (listed on the RCoA website under 'Accepted Tests of Knowledge'
- ALS (Advanced Life Support)or willingnessto complete within 3 months of appointment
- Full registration with the General Medical Council with a Licence to Practise
Desirable- Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
Knowledge and Experience
Essential- Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team
- Experience and competence in obstetric anaesthesia including labour epidurals
- Ability to critically assess critically ill patients in Resus and on the wards
Desirable- Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors and other staff
- Experience and competence in Regional Anaesthesia
