Job summary
Burstead ward is looking for a patient centered, good communicator who has experience in respiratory and Non-Invasive Ventilation to join our amazing team to cover maternity leave.

Your role will be to provide and maintain the highest possible standard of excellent nursing care, to support in developing and maintaining good ward management and organisational skills and to assist with the provision of an environment conducive to the education of staff. You will ensure a safe staffing and skill mix, acting as a point of contact for ward staff in the absence of the ward manager and providing expertise for the relevant speciality of the ward staff, others in the directorate, patients and their carers.

This will mean you will need to ensure the discharge planning process starts on admission, to prevent delays and make good utilisation of ward beds, liaising with consultants, site team, and members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure patients requiring our specialist respiratory services are triaged to the appropriate area.

Main duties of the job
Your role will entail having a sound clinical knowledge of the unique needs of medical and respiratory patients allowing you to inspire and motivate staff, to develop your leadership skills and your people management skills. To attend unit and link nurse meetings updating the ward manager and other staff as appropriate as well as attending and leading ward meetings.

You will be expected to gain skills in the assessment and management of patients requiring Non Invasive Ventilation support and to be willing to work towards becoming competent in holding the NIV bleep for the assessment and triage of acutely unwell patients in Type 2 Respiratory failure.

Ensure good relationships and communication exists between all healthcare professionals and promote harmonious working relationships and safe working practices and with patients, relatives and carers are maintained by frequent contact and availability.

You will need to support the ward manager in the provision of, operational management, and clinical leadership for the ward, providing a high standard of individualised care to patients, whilst maintaining at all times their privacy and dignity and to direct, supervise and monitor the provision of nursing care in accordance with individual care plans, maintaining high standards of patient care.

You will also be expected to assist the ward manager in appraising staff and managing sickness to ensure staff are able to work at their best.

Person Specification

• Essential: NMC Registration
• Essential: 2 years respiratory experience
• Desirable: 3 years respiratory experience
• Essential: Part 1 NIV trained
• Desirable: Working towards Part 2 NIV
• Essential: Willing to work towards Arterial blood gas competency
• Desirable: Able to do Arterial blood gases and read them
