Job summaryThe Postnatal Ward Manager at Broomfield Hospital is responsible for the operational, clinical, and professional leadership of the postnatal ward, ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality, and compassionate care to women and newborns.
The role supports Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust's commitment to "excellent, compassionate and respectful care", ensuring services align with the Trust's maternity transformation agenda, including Personalised Care and the Saving Babies' Lives Care Bundle.
The post holder will lead workforce development, promote a positive safety culture, and ensure effective patient flow within a busy maternity unit.
This is a unique opportunity for development covering a fixed term period. During this time the successful candidate will take a step in to band 7 leadership. Learning to line manager staff, the day to day running and oversight of the postnatal ward. Service development, identifying change and solutions for implementation
Main duties of the jobThe successful applicant will be able to ensure safe, high-quality postnatal care for mothers and newborns whilst overseeing clinical standards, including breastfeeding support, newborn observations, and maternal recovery. They will act as a clinical role model, supporting staff with complex cases and ensure compliance with NICE guidelines, local maternity policies, and safeguarding procedures. They will be able to escalate clinical concerns or deterioration appropriately Lead and coordinate themidwifery and support worker team on shift which will involve allocating staff effectively based on acuity and patient need. You will provide support, supervision, and mentorship to junior staff and students which will involve managing sickness, performance issues, and wellbeing of team members. It is imperative that you will promote a positive, inclusive team culture.

Person SpecificationQualifications- NMC Pin
- NLS Trained/equivalent
Desirable- Evidence of leadership training post registration
Experience- 3 years or more post registration clinical practise
- Evidence of multidisciplinary team working
- Knowledge of current national guidelines, policies and initiatives
