Job summary

Are you an RNMH (registered mental health nurse) looking to widen your experience working within a prison?Then look no further than our Integrated mental health and substance misuse team at HMP Stafford. Our Integrated mental health and substance Misuse team at HMP Stafford is looking for a dynamic and experienced registered mental health nurse. Our team is innovative, forward thinking and works within trauma informed principles. This is an exciting and diverse role for an individual who is passionate about providing excellent quality nursing care. You will have the privilege to influence and shape the provision of high-quality mental health care to those within a custodial environment. Would you like to develop your skills and build your confidence in dealing with a wide range of situations and working with partner agencies to provide the best care to people within the prison. Are you enthusiastic about working within an ever changing prison environment, do you enjoy collaborating and working within a full multi-disciplinary team to ensure varied and comprehensive interventions are delivered in-line with the stepped care model, do you have an excellent working knowledge of the Mental Health Act and its application to a custodial setting where transfers to hospital may be required, then this is the job for you!

Main duties of the job
Working effectively within the team you will provide evidence based interventions. You will manage a caseload and will be required to undertake assessments and reviews. Provision of mental health interventions to Service Users within the prison establishment across wellbeing, primary and secondary mental health. This will involve being responsible for managing their own caseload, including assessments, care planning, delivering interventions and reviewing care of patients located within the prison with a mental illness, within the framework of the multi-disciplinary team and Care Programme Approach. Post holders are expected to work as an integral member of the multidisciplinary, multi-agency team to provide advice and support to primary health care based within the prison and to liaise with, and provide advice and support to statutory and non-statutory agencies. To provide specialist mental health interventions to service users in the prison.Delivering groups on a variety of mental health interventions using trauma informed principles.Provide where need has been identified 1:1 psychological based intervention's.

Job responsibilities
Please see the attached job description for the full list of duties and responsibilities. A summary is as follows:
  • Responsible for the management of own caseload, this will include the assessment, monitoring and provision of specialist nursing interventions to individual prisoners with secondary mental health needs. In addition the post holder is responsible for arranging aftercare as required and ensuring care is co-ordinated with other services if necessary.
  • To provide a range of interventions across the integrated offender health model this includes primary care and wellbeing interventions where appropriate. To support and liaise with substance misuse team, primary care team and to deliver wellbeing interventions.   • Act upon referrals from Prison based Primary Care staff, and external teams. Referrals are allocated through the weekly team meeting. The post holder will provide assessment, implementation and development of care programmes for individuals on their caseload.
  • To be aware of polices relating to vulnerable adults and mental capacity and to be able to work within this framework.
  • To be able to work within the Mental Health Act 1983 with a robust knowledge of how it is deployed within the criminal justice service
  • Be familiar with and ensure implementation of all local, regional and national policies, procedures and guidelines pertinent to all staff within area of responsibility and comply with their contents in the pursuit of the highest standards of patient care.
  • To ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times including all dissemination of information and records.

Person Specification

Qualifications
Essential
  • Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Register.
  • Evidence of recent CPD and compliance with NMC revalidation.
  • Skills to include EMDR therapy

Experience
Essential
  • Experience of delivering NICE recommended psychological interventions and have post registration training in one of these interventions; DBT/CBT/EMDR
  • Experience of working with people with mental health problems using a stepped care approach, demonstrate knowledge from previous experience.
