Job summary
The post holder will be a member of the expert clinical leadership team within the Operating Theatre , providing skilled clinical and technical guidance.

This is a leadership role with a clinical component. The Theatre Lead/Sister/Charge Nurse is part of a small team responsible for the day-to-day operational management of the entire department. The post holder will be expected to actively participate in departmental coordination, the management of a delegated team, and the support and delivery of related activities.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will have overall responsibility for the theatre department at the Croydon Hospital.

All Band 6s, Band 5s, and Band 3s will continue to work collaboratively as one team, rotating across sites as needed.

Below is the guidance on how the contracted 37.5 hours per week will be spent:Clinical - 22.5 hrs and Management time - 15hrs

• Professionally accountable and responsible for the development and provision of high quality care and a safe environment for patient within theatre services.
• In collaboration with the Matrons and other Theatre Lead/Sister/Charge Nurse manage all human, financial and physical resources.
• To lead and co-ordinate the departmental team, taking continuing responsibility for the management and organisation of the entire clinical area, in a courteous and patient focused manner
• Work with clinicians as part of the management team to provide expert knowledge on all areas of theatres and to be a role model, providing sound leadership and motivation for all members of staff
• To be responsible for direct management of delegated staff, ensuring robust management of performance and absence

Job responsibilities

• Work with the team to ensure the delivery of high quality evidenced based care
• Work collaboratively across the directorate to promote a customer focused culture acting as a role model.
• Support the team in the delivery of Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Quality assurance initiatives
• Monitor and intervene to ensure adherence to the NMC and HPC Codes of conduct.
• Foster effective and efficient working relationships across the multidisciplinary team, role modelling excellent communication skills
• Work alongside the team to ensure that the department functions safely and to capacity on a day to day basis
• Is clinically and professionally up-to-date with current trends and developments in clinical speciality.
• Ensure strict adherence to behavioural codes and intervene as indicated
• Implement any learning from complaints and compliments received
• Work with the clinical educator and team leaders to identify opportunities for training and teaching in the clinical area for all staff, including medical and student nursing colleagues.
• Ensure that staff are competent with new equipment and techniques and new starters are adequately supported.
• Ensure team members are encouraged to undertake link roles, participate in audit and identify areas for improving practice.
• To facilitate the cascade of information ensuring awareness of Division, Trust and NHS initiatives, supporting staff discussion and responding to feedback by having staff meeting once a month
• Review the theater list for any discrepancies or to reduce last minute cancellations

Person Specification
Education / Qualifications
Essential

• Operating theatres RGN or registered ODP
• Mentorship in Practice or equivalent
• Theatre Qualification or equivalent

Desirable

• Degree/Diploma in leadership of relevant post qualification course

Knowledge/Experience
Essential

• Appropriate experience having been acquired to be able to demonstrate
• Significant recent experience, managing or supervising a clinical team
• Experience in the supervision of junior staff
• Evidence of development of policy and practice relevant to speciality

Desirable

• Experience of managing e-rostering
