Main duties of the job
The post is currently filled by a locum Doctor. The post holder will take lead on providing acute mental health care to the aligned catchment area that is in accordance with allocated GPs and covers approximately half of the total catchment area as there is another consultant appointed for the remaining half of the service.

This Consultant will work primarily at Pelham Lodge but will be required to cover both Lodges during times of annual leave, provide consultant support to Crisis HTT/ Liaison Team

Job description
Job responsibilities

• To review all service users within beds from the agreed sector(s) and ensure the minimum time necessary is spent as an inpatient.
• To case review each user in a bed face to face at least once weekly or more frequently if required. A second review must take place during the week either by the consultant or the supervised junior doctor.
• To see new admissions normally within 24-48 hours, or on Mondays if admitted over weekend periods. At Bank Holidays, the duty consultant would advise on admissions and the inpatient consultant would need to review these during the first 24 48 hours of the next working days.
• To work with the crisis home treatment professionals to treat those users at home who have been identified, seeing patients in their own home where necessary.
• Joint Policy Lead for medical advice in the acute area.

Additional Criteria
Essential

• Ability to assess and treat psychiatric problems in adults of working age and deal with crisis situations

Experience
Essential

• Evidence of effective multidisciplinary team involvement
• Teaching / education of junior medical staff.

Qualifications
Essential

• Full GMC Registration
• MRCPsych (or equivalent)
• CCT/Specialist Register (or within 6 months of CCT) in General Adult Psychiatry
• Section 12(2) Approval and Approved Clinician status

Desirable

• Relevant Higher Degree MD, PHD MSc or other additional clinical qualifications

Knowledge
Essential

• Mental Health Act
• National Policy and Strategy including mental health policy, Clinical Governance, evidenced based practice, NHS Plan, NSFs. NICE and other relevant guidance
• Awareness of current issues in mental health service provision
