Job summary
We are pleased to advertise an exciting opportunity to join NHS Resolutions Early Notification (EN) team working across the Safety and Learning Directorate as a National Obstetric Clinical Fellow.

This post is a fixed-term or secondment basis for one year. 1 post will be available to start from April 2027.

Main duties of the job
  • Investigate potential eligibility for compensation and take proactive action to reduce legal costs and improve the experience for the family and affected staff;
  • Share learning rapidly with the individual trust and the wider system in order to support safety improvement and prevent the same things happening again;
  • Build on our Saying Sorry and Being Fair work to ensure the process to obtain compensation is not a barrier to openness, candour and learning;
  • Preserve evidence to ensure we are able to respond to cases that a family may choose to bring at a later date; and
  • Improve the process for obtaining compensation for families, meeting needs in real time where possible and trying to reduce the risk of claims increasing in value due to inflation or unmet needs (such as psychological support) translating into larger losses

This is a unique opportunity to contribute your clinical expertise at a national level, influencing maternity and neonatal safety improvement across England through learning from incidents, claims and patient safety investigations. The role includes reviewing case files to provide a clinical opinion on care and providing feedback to support learning from claims to prevent future harm.

Additional responsibilities include the opportunity to lead on an individual project within the organisation for publication, represent NHS Resolution at external meetings with partner organisations; and attend local, regional and national meetings or events.

NHS Resolution operates several indemnity schemes, on behalf of the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, primarily for the handling of liability claims against English NHS Trusts and other commissioners and/or providers of NHS care.

Job responsibilities
What you'll bring
  • Specialist knowledge of working within obstetrics in the NHS with a current minimum training level of ST5 or above
  • An understanding of the current issues and challenges within healthcare and specifically maternity services
  • An understanding of current improvement initiatives and national strategies to improve the safety of maternity and neonatal services
  • Experience of project coordination, management or leadership
  • Experience of presenting complex information to a wide range of audiences
