We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the Multidisciplinary Blood Science Spoke Laboratory at the James Paget University Hospital. The successful candidate will ideally be multidisciplinary trained in Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry. The Laboratory operates Abbott Alinity Haematology and Chemistry analysers, Werfen TOPS coagulation and Grifols Blood Grouping analysers.

Knowledge of laboratory based computers, audits, SOPs, ISO standards and quality is a requirement. Essential qualities we require are an ability to work within a team, good communication skills, good technical proficiency and an ability to work unsupervised. You must be able to work under pressure and be able to meet deadlines, be flexible and adaptable and show that you are motivated and willing to develop your knowledge and skill.

Main duties of the job
Working as part of the Eastern Pathology Alliance, based at the James Paget University Hospital, Great Yarmouth, you will have the opportunity to work as part of a cutting-edge Laboratory encompassing Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

Health Care Scientist specialised in Blood Sciences required to perform a range of analyses in Clinical biochemistry, Immunoassay, Haematology, Transfusion and Reception Services. Maintain the Laboratory Information Service on a daily basis allowing the service users/clients access to accurate and updated patient care test results. As specialised staff required to train and demonstrate methodologies on very complex analytical equipment to medical staff, clinical scientists, other BMS staff, new entrant staff, students and medical laboratory assistants (MLA).

Job responsibilities

• Communicates complex clinical scientific service related test information to managers, consultants, nurses, other health care colleagues, patients and patient carers.
• Answers telephone inquiries from pathology users, patients and patient carers about test results and provide information that is complex about methodologies and service requirements.
• Interprets results and reassures the users that the information is correct when results do not agree with clinical presentation and investigate and problem solve situations in their specialist field.
• Manages own work and day-to-day routine work in specialised services.
• Participate in External Quality Assurance Schemes, process EQA samples, provides interpretation of results and investigate failures.
• Responsible for processing both urgent and routine work to maintain routine turnaround times in line with Trust and Service polices.
• Maintains complex specialist analytical equipment on a daily basis and sign off as fit for clinical use.
• Responsible for the efficient use of expensive tests and high value analysers.
• Run test procedures on all methodologies on a daily basis to include calibration and quality control testing and sign off methods as fit for clinical use.
• Fault find equipment and analyser function after formal in-house training.

• BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent
• State registration with Health Professions Council (HCPC)
• Specialist Diploma from the Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS) or equivalent

Experience

• In depth knowledge of the assays performed within their service
• How to problem solve complex clinical scientific problems
• Competent in Blood Sciences services (Clinical Biochemistry,Haematology and Transfusion) to the level required for Band 6 staff. To be achieved within 6-12 months of starting post
