Job summary
Fixed term contract/ secondment opportunity until 30/11/26

We would like to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated and enthusiastic podiatrist to join our multidisciplinary diabetic foot team based at the Norfolk & Norwich University NHS Foundation Trust. There is the possibility of there being more hours available on fixed term basis and this can be discussed at interview.

This is a really exciting opportunity to join a well-established multidisciplinary diabetic foot team which is one of the largest in the East of England and we see over 700 new patients and 6500 follow-ups per year, all of whom have complex foot disease.

What we can offer:
You will join a team of seven podiatrists. We can offer real variety in different sub-specialty working alongside consultants' colleagues in diabetes, microbiology, renal, vascular, plastics, and orthopaedic surgery in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Main duties of the job
To support the Principal Podiatrist in the daily operational and financial management of the team You will provide clinical leadership within the specialty including educational, professional and managerial guidance. You will be responsible for the daily clinical supervision of junior team members, podiatrist on rotation or students in outpatients, and other support staff within the team both administrative and clinical.

You will be responsible for the day to day running of the diabetic foot service providing specialist outpatient and inpatient podiatry services to patients with acute diabetic foot complications in a busy clinical environment. You work as part of the team in dedicated medical, renal and surgical clinics and ward rounds.

You will undertake advanced wound care, casting and pressure assessment techniques.

You will be required to order, interpret and advise on the results of microbiology, radiology and laboratory investigations. You will utilise the departments PGDs and policies on the administration of intra-muscular antibiotics.

You will help lead clinical research and audit being carried out within the department. The Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital is a teaching Hospital; therefore, you will be actively involved in the development and delivery of education material.

Part time: 28 hours per week

Job responsibilities
Clinical
To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of own work.To maintain a high standard of clinical care for patients under your management.To accept clinical responsibility for patients attending the service and to organise this efficiently and effectively with regard to clinical priorities and use of time.To use communication tools (verbal and non-verbal) and assess understanding of treatment proposals to gain valid informed consent were appropriate. With support, to work within a legal framework with patients who lack the capacity to consent to treatment.To appropriately deliver and discuss information with patients and carers on potentially limb threatening complications. Showing an awareness of any special needs the patient and/or carer has (hearing or visual impairment, poor memory, speech problems or physical impairment).To collect relevant patient information from a variety of sources e.g. ICE, PACS images, other investigations to assist with clinical prioritisation and patient management. This may also include medical and nursing records etc.To ensure patients are provided with all the necessary information on the options for and implications of treatment, enabling the development of a mutually agreed treatment plan.

Professional
To abide by the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists Code of Conduct and Standards of Practice and the Health Care Profession Council requirements for podiatry registration.To maintain own continuous professional development (CPD) and incorporate new trends and developments into practice. To be an active member of in-service training programmes. To attend and contribute as appropriate at staff meetings, tutorials, training sessions, courses, other CPD activities and to undertake reflective practice. To maintain a dynamic personal development plan and portfolio, with evidence of ongoing commitment to CPD and self-directed learning.To maintain comprehensive and accurate assessment and treatment records

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Professional qualifications (Diabetes related further study at MSc level or equivalent experience)

Experience
  • Significant postgraduate experience as a community podiatrist. Candidates offering less experience but meeting all other criteria will be considered on their merit
  • Contributing to clinical education/development of less experienced staff, students and/or assistants

Skills
  • Ability to undertake comprehensive specialist assessment of patients using investigative and analytical skills and to make a clinical diagnosis based on presenting signs and symptoms
  • Understanding of clinical governance and implications for services including experience of quality issues and audit. Including NICE guidance

Attitude & Aptitude
  • Ability to deal with challenging behaviour
