Reports to – Theatre Manager / Hospital Director and CQC Registered Manager
Role type – Bank
Hours – Bank shifts as required, usually on a Wednesday or Thursday, up to a maximum of 6 hours per shift.
Purpose of the post – To supplement and support the current Dressings Clinic Nurse and provide safe, effective, high-quality post-operative wound care and dressings clinic support
Professional registration – Current Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration as a Registered General Nurse
Rate of pay – £25 per hour, inclusive of statutory holiday pay arrangements where where applicable

About North Bristol Private Hospital
North Bristol Private Hospital is a CQC-regulated independent private hospital in Bristol. We are primarily a cosmetic surgery hospital, providing patient-centred surgical care for patients undergoing inpatient and day-case procedures in a modern, professional and supportive environment. Our services include procedures such as rhinoplasty, abdominoplasty, blepharoplasty and breast surgery, including breast reduction, breast uplift and breast augmentation. We also offer a private hernia service.

The dressings clinic plays an important role in supporting patients following cosmetic surgery, hernia surgery and other surgical procedures. The clinic helps to ensure appropriate post-operative wound assessment, dressing changes, timely escalation of concerns, continuity of care and clear communication with patients, consultants and the wider clinical team.

Role Summary
The Bank Dressings Clinic Nurse will provide high-quality nursing care within the hospital’s dressings clinic, supporting patients with post-operative wound reviews, dressing changes, wound care advice and timely escalation where clinical concerns are identified.

This is a bank position without guaranteed minimum hours. Shifts will be offered according to service need and the successful applicant’s availability. Shifts are usually expected to take place on a Wednesday or Thursday and will normally be up to a maximum of 6 hours per shift. The role is intended to supplement and support the existing Dressings Clinic Nurse and provide additional capacity during clinics.

The postholder must work within their professional competence, the NMC Code, hospital policies and procedures, CQC Fundamental Standards, infection prevention and control requirements, safeguarding expectations and all relevant clinical governance arrangements.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
  • Provide safe, effective and compassionate nursing care to patients attending the dressings clinic.
  • Undertake wound assessment, dressing changes and post-operative wound reviews within agreed clinical pathways, competence and scope of practice.
  • Recognise signs of wound infection, delayed healing, wound dehiscence, bleeding, adverse reaction, pain concerns or other post-operative complications and escalate promptly to the appropriate clinician or manager.
  • Provide clear wound care advice to patients, including advice on dressing care, hygiene, symptoms that require attention and when to seek further clinical support.
  • Support continuity of care by documenting treatment provided, advice given, concerns identified and onward actions required.
  • Work collaboratively with consultants, the existing Dressings Clinic Nurse, theatre team, ward team, outpatient team and administrative colleagues.
  • Ensure patient dignity, privacy, consent and confidentiality are maintained at all times.
  • Act within professional competence and seek advice where a clinical presentation falls outside agreed protocols or personal scope of practice.

Documentation and Information Governance
  • Comply with hospital infection prevention and control policies, standard precautions and aseptic non-touch technique principles where applicable.
  • Maintain a clean, safe and appropriately prepared clinical environment before, during and after clinic sessions.
  • Ensure dressings, consumables and clinical waste are used and disposed of safely in accordance with hospital procedures.
  • Follow hand hygiene, PPE, decontamination and environmental cleaning requirements.
  • Escalate infection prevention concerns promptly, including suspected wound infection, sharps incidents, contamination risks or breaches in procedure.

Safeguarding, Safety and Governance
  • Maintain accurate, legible, contemporaneous and confidential clinical records.
  • Record wound assessment findings, treatment provided, patient advice, escalation, follow-up requirements and any clinical concerns.
  • Handle patient information in accordance with UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, confidentiality requirements and hospital information governance procedures.
  • Ensure that patient information is only shared where appropriate, lawful and necessary for care delivery.

Teamworking and Professional Conduct
  • Recognise and escalate safeguarding concerns relating to adults or children in accordance with hospital safeguarding policies and statutory requirements.
  • Report incidents, near misses, complaints, clinical concerns and adverse events promptly through the hospital’s reporting processes.
  • Work in accordance with CQC Fundamental Standards and hospital governance requirements, including Regulation 12 Safe care and treatment, Regulation 17 Good governance, Regulation 18 Staffing and Regulation 19 Fit and proper persons employed.
  • Participate in relevant audit, quality improvement, learning, supervision or review activity where reasonably required.
  • Maintain mandatory training and role-specific clinical competence.

Person Specification
Criteria – Professional registration
  • Essential – Current NMC registration as a Registered General Nurse
  • Desirable – Evidence of additional wound care, tissue viability or surgical nursing training

Criteria – Experience
  • Essential – Post-registration nursing experience relevant to wound care, post-operative care, outpatients, surgical nursing, practice nursing, community nursing or a similar clinical setting
  • Desirable – Experience within an independent healthcare, private hospital, surgical clinic or minor operations environment

Criteria – Infection prevention
  • Essential – Understanding of infection prevention and control requirements, hand hygiene, PPE, aseptic principles and safe clinical waste disposal
  • Desirable – Experience participating in infection prevention audits or quality improvement activity

Criteria – Documentation
  • Essential – Ability to maintain accurate, timely and confidential clinical records
  • Desirable – Experience using electronic patient record systems

Criteria – Communication
  • Essential – Clear, professional and compassionate communication with patients and colleagues
  • Desirable – Experience providing patient education or post-operative advice

Criteria – Governance and safety
  • Essential – Understanding of incident reporting, safeguarding, confidentiality, consent, duty of candour and escalation responsibilities
  • Desirable – Familiarity with CQC-regulated healthcare environments

Criteria – Working pattern
  • Essential – Availability for bank shifts, usually Wednesday or Thursday, for up to 6 hours per shift according to service need
  • Desirable – Flexibility to provide occasional additional clinic support if required

  • Desirable – Previous completion of NHS or independent healthcare employment checks

Raise concerns appropriately where patient safety, clinical quality, infection control, safeguarding, conduct or staffing arrangements may be affected.

Essential Requirements
  • Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered General Nurse.
  • Relevant post-registration clinical experience.
  • Competence in wound assessment, dressing changes and escalation of post-operative concerns.
  • Understanding of professional accountability under the NMC Code.
  • Commitment to safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led patient care.
  • Ability to work independently within competence and seek advice appropriately.
  • Strong communication, record-keeping and patient support skills.
  • Commitment to confidentiality, dignity, equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Completion of all required pre-employment checks and mandatory training before commencing work.

Working Arrangements
This is a bank role. Bank work is offered on an as-required basis and there is no guarantee of minimum hours. The hospital is not obliged to offer work, and the bank worker is not obliged to accept every shift offered.

Shifts are expected to be offered mainly on a Wednesday or Thursday and will usually be for a maximum of 6 hours per shift.

Shift availability will depend on service requirements, clinic activity and the need to supplement or support the current Dressings Clinic Nurse.

The successful applicant must only accept shifts where they are able to work safely, competently and in line with professional obligations, including rest, fatigue, fitness to practise and any other employment commitments.

Training Requirements
The successful applicant must complete all required induction, mandatory training and role-specific training before undertaking unsupervised duties in the dressings clinic. Training requirements will be determined by the hospital according to the postholder’s previous experience, evidence of competence, professional registration status and the clinical duties they will be expected to perform.

Mandatory Training
  • Basic life support appropriate to the clinical setting.
  • Infection prevention and control, including hand hygiene, PPE, safe disposal of clinical waste and sharps safety.
  • Safeguarding adults and children at the level required for the role.
  • Information governance, confidentiality, UK GDPR awareness and secure handling of patient information.
  • Health and safety, fire safety and emergency procedures.
  • Manual handling and safe movement within the clinical environment.
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Duty of candour, incident reporting and raising concerns.

Role-Specific Training and Competence
  • Dressings clinic induction, including clinic workflow, patient pathway, documentation standards and escalation routes.
  • Wound assessment, recognition of infection or deterioration and appropriate escalation of post-operative concerns.
  • Aseptic non-touch technique and safe wound care practice where applicable to the patient pathway.
  • Use, storage and disposal of dressings, consumables and clinical equipment used in the clinic.
  • Local policies and procedures relevant to consent, chaperoning, privacy and dignity, complaints, safeguarding, infection prevention and clinical governance.
  • Electronic or paper-based clinical record completion, including contemporaneous documentation of assessment, treatment, advice and follow-up requirements.

Supervision, Sign-Off and Ongoing Development
The postholder may be required to complete a period of supervised practice or local competency sign-off before working independently in the dressings clinic. Any identified training needs must be addressed promptly and the nurse must not undertake duties outside their competence, training or agreed scope of practice.

The postholder is responsible for maintaining professional competence, NMC revalidation requirements and relevant continuing professional development. The hospital may request evidence of completed training, certificates, competency assessments or reflective learning where relevant to safe practice and governance requirements.

Interview Process

Candidates may be asked to discuss practical clinical scenarios relevant to the role, such as recognising signs of wound infection, managing a patient concern, escalating a post-operative complication, maintaining confidentiality, or responding to an infection prevention issue. The purpose of these questions is to assess role-related knowledge, judgement, competence and suitability for safe practice in a CQC-regulated healthcare environment.

As part of the recruitment process, the hospital may also verify professional registration, right to work in the UK, relevant clinical experience, availability for bank shifts and any training or pre-employment checks required before the successful applicant can commence work.
