Job summary
North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a dynamic and motivated Consultant in Palliative Medicine to join our well-established North Cumbria Specialist Palliative care team which spans acute and community. This is an additional consultant post to increase the consultant support across our acute hospital sites in Carlisle and Whitehaven. There is an established End of Life Improvement Programme with Medical and Nursing leads in place. A key part of the role would be in contributing to the delivery of end of life improvement work and working collaboratively with stakeholders.

The successful candidate will join a team of consultants in Palliative medicine supported by nurse specialists in both acute and community. There are opportunities to develop sub specialty interest where this contributes to and complements the department and Trusts' service needs. There are undergraduate, postgraduate education and research opportunities available. There is no on-call commitment although this may change as services develop.

The post is for 10PA however applicants wishing to work less than full-time will still be considered.

Applicants are required to have full specialist registration in Palliative Medicine or be within 6 months of CCT/CESR.

Person Specification
Qualifications and training
Essential
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCP, MRCGP or equivalent
  • Entry on GMC specialist register in palliative medicine via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) or CESR
Desirable
  • MD or PhD degree
  • Postgraduate teaching qualification

Experience and knowledge
Essential
  • Clinical training and experience in Palliative Medicine equivalent to that required to gain entry to the UK Certificate of Completed Training (CCT) in Palliative Medicine
  • Excellent communication skills with patients, colleagues, managers and other staff
  • High standard of clinical skill and expertise in palliative Medicine
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Knowledge and experience of national end of life tools
Desirable
  • Specialist Registrar in Palliative Medicine or Equivalent
  • Experience of working with primary care / community colleagues
  • Professional supervision and management of non-consultant staff

Management and administrative
Essential
  • Awareness of the managerial role of a consultant in the NHS
Desirable
  • Formal training / courses in NHS management for palliative medicine

Organisation and planning
Essential
  • Able to organise oneself and own workload
  • Able to safely prioritise clinical need
  • Experience & ability to work in multi-professional teams
  • Information technology skills
Desirable
  • Understanding of NHS, clinical governance & resource constraints

  • Evidence of clinical teaching experience
