Job summaryThe Clinical Lead/Deputy Manager within the Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team (CRHTT) plays a key leadership role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality, safe, and effective mental health crisis services. Working in partnership with the Team Manager, the post holder provides clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary team, supports the management of complex cases, and ensures that service users receive timely, person-centred, and recovery-focused care as an alternative to hospital admission whenever appropriate. The role involves overseeing clinical risk management, maintaining professional and clinical standards, providing supervision and support to staff, and promoting a culture of continuous learning and service improvement. The Clinical Lead is also responsible for supporting operational management, workforce development, clinical governance, safeguarding, and partnership working with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the service meets local and national quality standards and delivers positive outcomes for service users and their carers.
Main duties of the jobThe Clinical Lead/Deputy Manager maintains oversight of all patients receiving care from the CRHTT, ensuring that care is safe, effective, and responsive to individual needs. The post holder provides clinical leadership in the review and management of complex cases, supports decision-making regarding admissions and discharges, and leads the gatekeeping function by assessing and screening potential hospital admissions to ensure that all alternatives to admission have been considered and that admission is clinically appropriate when required. Working collaboratively with inpatient wards, community services, and partner agencies, they facilitate timely access to care, promote least restrictive practice, and support safe transitions between inpatient and community services.

In order to meet the needs of the Trust you may be required from time to time to work at different locations to your normal place of work. This may mean that you are required to work at any location that fall under Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey or Islington. The Trust reserves the right to require staff to work at such other places or locations as it considers reasonable and necessary on a temporary or permanent basis.
Job responsibilitiesA key responsibility of the role is the management and oversight of the gatekeeping function, ensuring that all referrals for psychiatric admission are assessed appropriately and that alternatives to hospital admission are fully explored where clinically safe and suitable. The post holder will work collaboratively with inpatient wards, community mental health services, emergency departments, primary care, social care, and other partner agencies to facilitate effective crisis intervention, admission avoidance, and safe discharge planning.
The Clinical Lead/Deputy Manager will provide professional supervision, mentorship, and support to staff, promoting continuous professional development, reflective practice, and high standards of clinical care. They will contribute to workforce planning, recruitment, appraisal, performance management, and service development initiatives while promoting a culture of learning, innovation, equality, and inclusion.
The post holder will also lead on clinical governance activities, including audit, incident review, safeguarding, quality improvement, and risk management processes, ensuring that standards of care are continuously monitored and improved. In the absence of the Team Manager, they will assume delegated responsibility for the operational management of the service, ensuring safe staffing levels, effective resource utilisation, and achievement of key performance and quality indicators.
Person SpecificationEducation and QualificationsEssential- Registered mental health professional (e.g. mental health nurse, social worker) with valid professional license
Desirable- Postgraduate qualification in relevant mental health discipline
Experience and KnowledgeEssential- Significant experience working in mental health crisis services or similar acute care settings
- Demonstrated leadership and managerial experience, including supervision of staff and managing resources effectively
- Experience in crisis assessment, risk management and formulation and delivery of crisis intervention plans
- Knowledge of agencies to support management of referrers.
Desirable- Knowledge of principles/application of co-production
Skills and AbilitiesEssential- Excellent leadership and team management abilities
- Strong clinical assessment and formulation skills
- In-depth understanding of mental health conditions, crisis intervention and evidence-based treatments
