Job summary
We're looking for an enthusiastic HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist to join our Haematology team as a Senior Biomedical Scientist. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a strong background in Haematology who is ready to take on a senior role or further develop their leadership skills.

You'll be involved in the day-to-day running of the Haematology laboratory, supporting the team to deliver a safe, accurate and efficient diagnostic service. Alongside specialist laboratory work, you'll help supervise and develop staff, contribute to service improvements, and support the laboratory in maintaining UKAS accreditation and the highest standards of quality and patient care.

Main duties of the job
As a Senior Biomedical Scientist, you will support the day-to-day management of the Haematology laboratory, ensuring the delivery of a high-quality, safe and efficient diagnostic service. You will undertake and authorise a wide range of routine and specialist Haematology and Coagulation investigations, providing accurate and timely results to support patient care.

You will supervise, mentor and develop laboratory staff, promote quality improvement, and contribute to maintaining UKAS accreditation and compliance with ISO 15189 standards. Working closely with Consultant Haematologists and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will play an active role in service development, quality assurance, training and the implementation of best practice. You will also provide operational support to the department, deputising for the Operational Lead when required and, on rare occasions, supporting the emergency out-of-hours service if needed.

Job responsibilities
The successful candidate will support the day-to-day management of the Haematology laboratory, ensuring the delivery of a high-quality diagnostic service while leading on quality, training and service improvement. They will work collaboratively with colleagues across our laboratory network to maintain high standards of patient care and laboratory practice.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential
  • Haematology MSc/Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical science. IBMS Higher Specialist in Haematology.
  • HCPC State registration
  • Evidence of mandatory on-going CPD

Desirable
  • NEBOSH Certificate
  • Recognised postgraduate management qualification

Experience
Essential
  • Experience training and competency assessing staff in accordance with departmental, HCPC, IBMS and ISO 15189 requirements.
  • Audits and quality improvement
  • Troubleshooting Analysers
  • Experience of incident investigation, root cause analysis and implementation of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA)

Desirable
  • Previous experience appropriate to a senior position
  • Ability to perform IQC & EQA reviews

Knowledge
Essential
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge of Haematology and Transfusion underpinned by theoretical and practical experience
  • Awareness of current professional issues
  • Proficient in quality and clinical audit, administration, management and development of haematology services
  • Knowledge and experience with Morphology
  • Good practical knowledge of health and safety including COSHH, fire regulations and risk assessments
  • Understanding of validation and verification of laboratory equipment and methods
  • Knowledge of information governance and confidentiality requirements

Desirable
  • Knowledge of LIMS systems e.g. Winpath and ECDL
  • Knowledge of the NHS sickle cell and thalassaemia (SCT) screening programme
  • Knowledge of Abnormal white cell malignancies
  • Good understanding and knowledge of Haemostasis and associated disorders
  • Experience of undertaking risk assessments and implementing safe systems of work
