Job summary
Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is recruiting a Consultant Psychiatrist to cover psychiatric needs across HMP Lowdham Grange and HMP Ranby in Nottinghamshire. This is a full time job but we would welcome interest from those interested in working part time including those who are considering retirement from their current positions in order to take up a portfolio career to suite their post-retirement needs and interests.

If you are keen to provide mental healthcare to arguably one of the most disadvantaged and mentally disordered population in the country, then this job is for you. You will be working with a multidisciplinary team of mental health professionals including counsellors and psychologists and those with expertise in neurodiversity. You would also have the advantage of working in a polyclinic model with on-site fellow healthcare professionals such as GPs, physiotherapy, dentistry, sexual health, opticians as well as Substance Misuse services.

If successful, your preferred base will be discussed with you, with the expectation to provide colleague cover in other sites in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire prisons.

You will have the option to work flexibly to undertake clinical administration, management duties and SPA from home.

Main duties of the job
To provide high quality, trauma informed psychiatric care within integrated mental health teams in prisons. The post holder will deliver assessment, diagnosis and treatment of people with severe mental illness, personality disorders, neurodevelopmental conditions and complex comorbidity in custodial settings, ensuring equivalence of care with community services.

You will also have the opportunity to supervise senior trainees from the regional higher psychiatric training programme in Forensic Psychiatry covering Rampton Hospital, Arnold Lodge and Wathwood Medium secure units and Nottingham as well as Derby low secure and community forensic services.

Essential

Knowledge and Experience
Essential
  • Royal College of Psychiatrists AAC and Section 12 approval
  • Inclusion on (or eligibility for) GMC Specialist Register
  • Approved Clinical status
  • Evidence of CPD, Appraisal and re-validation compliance
  • Broad clinical experience and current clinical expertise
  • Ability to provide compassionate, trauma informed care in secure settings

Desirable
  • Prison or forensic psychiatry experience
  • Experience in neurodiversity / ADHD
  • Teaching, leadership or service development experience

  • The ability to provide trauma-informed clinical care, including when faced with challenging behaviour and the constraints of secured settings.
  • The ability to prioritize effectively, to work in a flexible way, and to respond to change to support the needs of patients and continuity of psychiatry provision across NHFT Secured Services
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and compassionate leadership skills
  • A growth mindset and willingness to learn and teach in a constructive manner, taking on board the ideas of others and working within a leadership structure.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues including those working for subcontracted services and across other disciplines.
  • Sound judgement and astuteness in understanding and working with complexity
  • The ability to gather and assimilate data from across secured services to support effective clinical governance and quality improvement of psychiatry service provision
  • The ability to communicate information in a range of formats including one-to-one meetings, formal and informal meetings, written reports and electronic communication including small databases.
  • Ability to work effectively across multiple sites.
