Job summary
As a Band 5 Children's Speech and Language Therapist, you will provide assessment, intervention and advice for children and young people aged 0-19 with speech, language and communication needs across a range of settings including schools, clinics, homes and community environments. You will manage your own caseload as an autonomous practitioner, with support from experienced senior clinicians and a well-established multidisciplinary team.

Working collaboratively with education, health and social care colleagues, you will deliver high-quality, evidence-based and child-centred care that helps children and young people achieve their communication goals and participate fully in everyday life.

The role will also support delivery of the Experts at Hand programme, working alongside education settings and system partners to build inclusive approaches for children and young people with speech, language and communication needs. You will help increase the confidence and capability of education staff through training, advice and collaborative working, supporting earlier identification, timely intervention and improved educational participation. Working with health, education and SEND partners, you will contribute to local SEND priorities and reforms, helping improve outcomes for children and young people within mainstream settings.

Main duties of the job
Provide assessment, diagnosis, intervention and advice for children and young people with a range of speech, language and communication needs, managing a designated caseload and adapting interventions to meet individual needs. Contribute to SEND processes, including Education, Health and Care Needs Assessments (EHCNAs), EHCP reports and annual reviews, working collaboratively with children, families and professionals to achieve agreed outcomes.

Support delivery of the Experts at Hand programme by working with mainstream education settings and partner organisations to strengthen inclusive practice and improve support for children and young people with speech, language and communication needs. Through training, modelling and collaborative working, help increase the confidence and capability of education staff, supporting earlier identification and intervention and improving educational participation and outcomes.

Contribute to local SEND priorities by working alongside education colleagues, local authorities and wider partners to embed evidence-based approaches and improve access to support within mainstream settings.

Participate in clinical governance, audit, service evaluation, quality improvement and student education activities, contributing to the ongoing development of a high-quality, evidence-based speech and language therapy service

About us
Oxfordshire Children's Integrated Therapy Service is made up of Children's Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists, profession specific Therapy Instructors, Integrated Therapy Assistant Practitioners and an Administrative Team. We are jointly commissioned by the ICB and Oxfordshire County Council. The Service is led by Operational Managers and Professional Leads for each Therapy.

The SLT team is made up of Band 5 and 6 Therapists, Technical Assistants, Apprentices, and both Specialist Team Leads and Specialist Clinical Leads (Band 7). We provide Speech and Language Therapy for children and young people aged 0 - 19 years across Oxfordshire in a range of settings. The Service delivery model is based on six Clinical Pathways and underpinned by the current evidence base.

We offer a comprehensive induction programme, ongoing supervision and appraisal with development reviews from experienced specialist staff, regular in-house training as well as opportunities for involvement in Service Development.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Recognized speech and language therapy degree/qualification or equivalent
  • HCPC registration (pending)
  • RCSLT membership (pending)

Desirable
  • Any SLT specific training attended

Skills and Experience
Essential
  • Experience of working with CYP with speech language and communication needs
  • Able to communicate effectively particularly where barriers to language exist
  • Understanding of the statutory / legal requirements for working within the specialty including a working knowledge of the SEND code of practice
  • Experience of contributing to education of children, young people, families, colleagues in health and education settings
  • Demonstrates knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to client group

Desirable
  • Experience of working with children
  • Experience of managing and prioritising a caseload
  • Completion of RCSLT NQP Competencies
  • Experience of working as a band 5 SLT
  • Experience of Therapy Outcome Measures TOMs
