Main duties of the jobThe post holder will respond to inpatient referrals from across the trust, in person and/by phone. Working to support patients and staff in all areas of continence and catheter care. Assessing patients for, and teaching intermittent catheterisation. Education is a significant part of the role delivering bespoke and regular teaching on induction programmes university courses and also in response to requests from specific clinical areas.

Job responsibilities- Develop and provide comprehensive clinical care, specialist advice, and psychosocial support to patients and their families and carers who are referred to the Continence service.
- Work as an autonomous, specialist practitioner alongside members of the multidisciplinary team as required within the Continence service.
- Service specific skills, tasks or procedures required are to:
- Communicate with patients in ways that empowers them to make informed choices about their healthcare.
- Act as an advocate for individuals and the client group.
- Provide appropriate education to healthcare professionals, patients, their families and carers, to promote health and encourage selfcare
- Maintain adequate documentation to NMC requirements for all patients seen and advice given in any practice setting and contribute to clinical activity/data collection as required.
- Be a defined point of contact for ward staff requiring advice or support with continence issues
- Accept appropriate patient referrals from clinical areas to give advice on aspects of continence, including bowel, bladder and catheter associated urinary tract infection prevention
- Role may include line management and/or supervision of junior members of staff in the continence service, if required.
- Be flexible within the Continence service to ensure appropriate specialist cover.
Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- Registered Nurse (NMC) or AHP (HCPC)
- First level degree (HEI Level 5 or 6) in undergraduate base profession
- Demonstrable evidence of ability to achieve post-graduate study at Level 6 or 7 study.
- Supervision, Mentoring or Facilitating Workplace Learning Qualification
Desirable- Leadership Course or Qualification
- Completed or completing Level 7 MSc, relevant to clinical area or speciality, or willing to undertake
Knowledge and ExperienceEssential- Demonstrates knowledge or transferrable skills within speciality of the recruiting area for the role
- Excellent clinical and practical skills
- Awareness of clinical governance issues and measures of quality
Desirable- Experience of team leadership ability or management skills
- Experience of applying research evidence to own clinical practice
- Experience of clinical governance practices, audit, service evaluation or quality improvement in clinical practice
- Existing technical clinical procedural skills relevant to clinical service

- Enthusiasm towards teaching patients, staff and others in the MDT as needed.
- Ability to recognise own limitations, working within scope of practice, acting on feedback from clinical supervisors when required.
- Flexibility to work a variety of shifts, which may include days/weekends or nights, as required to complete training and clinical supervision in practice, and dependent on service needs.
- Evidence of effective team working as part of a multi-disciplinary professional team
