Job summary
This job role is for Maternity Support Workers wishing to commence on the Midwifery Apprenticeship offered by the University of Winchester alongside Oxford University Hospitals Trust. Students will commence on an apprenticeship programme that will lead to Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Midwifery.

Students are paid a full time (37.5 hour) wage as a band 3 Maternity Support Worker throughout their 3-year training. Funding for the course fees will be from the OUH Apprenticeship Levy.

This course runs from January 2027 with completion in January 2030. This course is a mix of 50% theory to 50% practical. All practical elements are with Oxford University Hospitals Trust, with a mixture of community and hospital based placements. You will be expected to work a variety of shifts throughout your training including nights, weekends and long days. The other 50% theory will require attendance in person at the University of Winchester.

Main duties of the job
To be eligible for application, candidates must:

• Be working at OUH as a Maternity Support Worker for 12 months by the start date of the Apprenticeship (January 2027)
• Have completed their Care Certificate
• Have completed local competencies and be signed off to practice as a Band 3 Maternity Support Worker
• Have the necessary academic requirements for entry onto the apprenticeship course This is 96 UCAS points from either A Levels or Level 3 equivalent. Please note, if candidate holds a qualification higher than Level 3 these also meet the accepted requirements.

Additional Desirable Criteria:

• Have extensive experience in various maternity settings as a Maternity Support Worker
• Have a science Level 3/A Level qualification or equivalent

Interviews will be held at the John Radcliffe alongside recruiters from the University of Winchester.

Please note: Candidates will need to apply for a band 5 midwifery post upon completion of the course. They are guaranteed a midwifery interview with OUH in their final year of training.

Job responsibilities
As a member of the maternity team, you will support and closely work with registered midwives and sonographers to deliver a high standard of care to women in a caring and safe environment. To work as part of the wider ward team in developing and maintaining services provided to women and contribute to the safe, efficient and smooth running of the ward/clinical area. To maintain the dignity and privacy of all women and respect their right to confidentiality.

You will be supported throughout you Apprenticeship by members of the OUH Maternity Team and staff at the University of Winchester.

Education, training and qualifications
Essential

• 5 GCSE's or equivalent, to include Maths and English
• Good command of spoken English assessed at interview
• Motivated to develop knowledge and skills
• Evidence of the required 96 UCAS entry points
• Completion of Care Certificate

Desirable

• Evidence of Level 3 or above in a Science based subject
• Additional training relating to maternity completed

Clinical Practice
Essential

• 12 months experience as a MSW by January 2027

Desirable

• Evidence of having worked in a variety of maternity setting

• Demonstrate understanding of confidentiality
• Demonstrate insight into role applied for.
• To be willing to learn new skills and to undertake the Care Certificate in the agreed timescales when new to role

• Essential IT skills in order to access required systems such as electronic patient records.
