Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse to join our Paediatric Critical Care team and be an integral part of the PCCU Education and PCCU Clinical team.

Post holders will be expected to work a minimum of 23hrs per week across days, nights and weekend shifts.

Main duties of the job
The post-holder will be an experienced, knowledgeable practitioner in Paediatric Critical Care providing clinically based practice development and education. They will role model best, evidence-based professional practice. Clinical education will form approximately 50% of the role, engaging in education activities and working flexibly to maximise education delivery to support staff and patient safety/experience e.g.: Working alongside learners at all stages of development to facilitate learning Identifying and supporting learning needs within PCC Developing and updating training resources Contributing to the delivery of education programmes within the Paediatric Critical Care unit and across the Directorate.The role holder will spend the remainder their time in clinical practice working within the B6 clinical workforce to: Provide clinical leadership ensuring a high standard of individualised nursing and family centred care is delivered to critically ill children. Work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, communicating effectively with all levels of medical and nursing staff. Uphold PCCU's Nursing Philosophy of Care. Effectively manage PCCU on a day-to-day basis, in the absence of a Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.

About us
Paediatric Critical Care (PCC) at OUH includes 17 co-located Level 2 and 3 critical care beds, delivering a wide range of specialist services to patients from Oxfordshire and the wider Thames Valley and Wessex Paediatric Critical Care Operational Delivery Network (TVW PCC ODN). We are a leading Neurosurgical and Major Trauma Centre and have a vast number of medical and surgical specialities.

SORT Retrieval Service OUH PCC Services include the SORT (Southampton Oxford Retrieval Team) service, delivered in collaboration with Southampton across TVW PCC ODN. It is staffed by doctors, ACPs and nurses from both Oxford and Southampton, with Oxford providing a retrieval team 24/7.

Critical Care Outreach Service is a team of experienced nurses who support all healthcare professionals in the assessment and management of unwell children across the children's hospital, emergency department, and neonatal unit, following up and supporting children and families following discharge.

Education, Development and Training is provided through a structured competency-based development programme, and we are piloting an inhouse PCC L3 specialist course for nursing staff. Clinical and leadership career development pathways are available. We have a growing team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners who work across PCCU and SORT services at OUH.

Job responsibilities
The successful candidate will be able to work well within the team and be willing to work a mixed shift pattern including days and nights across the whole week. They will have experience of and enthusiasm for teaching and supporting staff development through a variety of methods. They will have significant post registration experience with a relevant course for Paediatric Critical Care, and experience / evidence of competency working as a Band 6 within Paediatric Critical Care. They will be a self-motivated and enthusiastic individual with excellent clinical and communication skills, with an ability to lead and motivate others.

Qualifications
Essential
  • RSCN (Child)/RN (Adult) NMC Registered
  • Recognised Paediatric Critical Care Course
  • Recognised qualification in Teaching and assessing/ENB 998/ associate mentorship course or equivalent.
  • Practice assessor/supervisor training/practice educator
  • Degree level study or working towards a degree

Desirable
  • Evidence of commitment to teaching staff and students.
  • Qualifications and/or evidence of study at Level 7, with additional qualifications such as a PG Cert in Clinical Education or equivalent considered advantageous

Experience
Essential
  • Significant clinical practice experience within a Paediatric Critical Care setting delivering L2/L3 care.
  • Experience / evidence of competence working as a Band 6 in a L3 Paediatric Critical Care unit.
  • Demonstrated experience in clinical education, supervision, and assessment of learners.

Desirable
  • Demonstrates knowledge of value & use of research findings.
  • Ability to facilitate and participate in research/benchmark and audit programmes.
  • Experience delivering a variety of teaching approaches

  • Demonstrates an understanding of the need for high standards of individualised Critical care/ family centred care.
  • Evidence of excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Demonstrates the potential for leadership.

  • Evidence of developing an aspect of Critical care nursing practice.

  • Evidence of clinical knowledge in area of speciality, and excellence in practice.
  • Experience of leading and supporting a team in clinical area.
  • Clinical decision-making skills and ability to prioritise workload.
  • Computer literacy

Desirable
  • Experience of managing change from a personal and leadership level.
  • Knowledge/experience of: - audit in practice - implementation of quality improvement measures - risk management
  • Experience of supporting learners with diverse learning needs.
