Job summaryWe are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated pharmacist to join the Medicines Effectiveness team as an Immunology and Clinical Commissioning Pharmacist on a 10-month secondment. The post will provide specialist pharmacy support to Immunology services, contribute to immunoglobulin programme work and support commissioning activities across the Trust. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience in a highly specialised area of pharmacy practice while supporting delivery of key service priorities during the temporary secondment of the substantive post holder.
Main duties of the jobThe postholder will provide specialist pharmacy support to Immunology services at OUH and support commissioning-related activities during a 10-month secondment cover period. Responsibilities include supporting immunoglobulin services, maintaining the immunoglobulin database programme, providing specialist medicines advice, contributing to service development initiatives, and working with multidisciplinary teams and commissioners to ensure high-quality patient care and effective use of specialised medicines.

Job responsibilitiesDetailed Job Description and Main ResponsibilitiesThe postholder will be responsible for providing specialist clinical pharmacy services to Clinical Immunology across Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and supporting regional immunoglobulin commissioning and governance activities. The role will work closely with Clinical Immunology clinicians, the Medicines Effectiveness Team, NHS England and the Thames Valley regional immunology network to ensure the safe, effective and cost-effective use of specialist medicines.
Clinical Immunology and Immunoglobulin Services- Provide an enhanced specialist clinical pharmacy service to the Clinical Immunology Directorate.
- Support and co-ordinate the Thames Valley Sub-Regional Immunoglobulin Assessment Panel (IVIG Panel) and associated actions.
- Support the implementation, maintenance and ongoing development of the Immunoglobulin e-referral platform.
- Maintain accurate records of patients discussed by the panel, including referral details, outcomes and efficacy information.
- Manage and approve requests submitted through the Immunoglobulin e-referral system, ensuring compliance with national and local prescribing guidelines and providing liaison with clinicians and pharmacists as required.
- Monitor immunoglobulin usage across OUH and the wider Thames Valley region and follow up issues as required.
- Support the Clinical Unit Manager for Clinical Immunology in ensuring immunoglobulin activity is uploaded to the MDSAS database.
- Develop and maintain homecare services for patients receiving immunoglobulins and treatments for Hereditary Angioedema, including C1 esterase inhibitor therapies.
Commissioning, Performance and High-Cost Medicines- Support the Medicines Effectiveness Team in monitoring commissioner-defined key performance indicators for immunoglobulin services.
- Develop and implement action plans where KPI performance requires improvement.
- Monitor and report immunoglobulin utilisation, high-cost drug expenditure and associated cost-saving opportunities.
- Represent the Thames Valley Sub-Regional Immunoglobulin Assessment Panel at NHS England High-Cost Drug meetings and Homecare User Group meetings.
- Support the development of shared-care agreements and medicines pathways across the region.
Clinical Pharmacy Practice- Undertake prescription review to optimise therapy and ensure safe prescribing.
- Complete medicines reconciliation and medication history reviews.
- Provide advice on dosage, monitoring requirements, administration and adverse effects of medicines.
- Monitor the appropriateness, effectiveness and safety of medication regimens.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, clinical meetings, consultant ward rounds and outpatient clinics as appropriate.
- Support discharge planning and transfer of care arrangements.
- Maintain non-medical prescribing competency or work towards qualification in accordance with Trust policy.
Medicines Governance and Service Improvement- Participate in the production, review and critical appraisal of evidence for formulary applications, Medicines Information leaflets and Patient Group Directions.
- Lead or contribute to the development and implementation of protocols for high-cost, high-risk and high-use medicines.
- Contribute to the implementation of relevant NICE Technology Appraisals, national service standards and local guidance.
- Support incident reporting, risk assessment and the dissemination of learning from medicines-related incidents.
- Contribute to clinical governance activities and medicines optimisation initiatives across the Trust.
Leadership, Education and Professional Development- Act as a specialist source of pharmaceutical knowledge for Immunology and associated services.
- Provide education and training to pharmacy staff, medical staff, nurses, patients and carers.
- Support the training and development of trainee pharmacists, rotational pharmacists and pharmacists undertaking postgraduate qualifications.
- Contribute to pharmacy-wide initiatives, quality improvement projects and directorate objectives.
- Promote the clinical pharmacy service and contribute to regional and national specialist networks and professional groups.
Research, Audit and Evaluation- Participate in pharmacy audit programmes and service evaluations.
- Support clinical trials and the management of unlicensed medicines where appropriate.
- Undertake practice research and service improvement work aligned with Trust and Pharmacy strategies.
Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) degree or equivalent.
- Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy (or equivalent).
- Registered Pharmacist with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
Desirable- Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS).
- MSc in Clinical Pharmacy
- Independent / Non-Medical Prescribing qualification.
- Accredited Diploma Tutor status.
