Job summary
Role Purpose To deliver safe, effective and economical use of medicines by independently providing dispensing, clinical screening, and patient-facing pharmaceutical care. The role is responsible for the day-to-day delivery of core pharmacy services, applying professional judgement to ensure compliance with NHS policies, regulatory requirements and organisational procedures. To contribute to service improvement and multidisciplinary care.

About us
PML is a successful not-for-profit, GP-led organisation providing various NHS community and primary care clinical services to patients across Oxfordshire and Northamptonshire. We have evolved as a NHS healthcare provider since 2004 and in the last few years have grown significantly, now employing around 300 staff with a turnover of circa £16m. PML holds GMS contracts, as well as being a GP Federation representing circa 50 GP practices covering approximately 650,000 patients.

Job responsibilities
Role Accountabilities
Medicines Safety and Governance
  • Deliver safe, legal and effective medicines management in line with NHS requirements, organisational policies and local standard operating procedures.
  • Interpret and apply medicines legislation, policies and clinical guidance in routine practice, escalating only high-risk or complex issues.
  • Contribute to maintaining and improving clinical governance and medicines safety processes within the service.

Clinical Practice and Prescription Management
  • Undertake clinical screening and accuracy checking of prescriptions, using professional judgement to identify and resolve routine issues.
  • Manage day-to-day prescribing queries within scope of practice, liaising with prescribers and escalating where appropriate.
  • Ensure prescriptions are processed safely, efficiently and in line with legal and professional standards.

Patient Care and Medicines Optimisation
  • Provide patient-centred medicines advise, counselling and support to promote safe use, adherence and improved health outcomes.
  • Build effective relationships with patients to support understanding of treatment and address routine concerns.
  • Contribute to medicines optimisation initiatives within the service.

Professional Practice and Development
  • Maintain registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council and always uphold professional standards.
  • Work independently within professional competence, seeking guidance for complex or high-risk situations.
  • Engage in continuing professional development and training to maintain and enhance clinical knowledge and skills.

Service Delivery and Team Coordination
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team, including GPs, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Coordinate day-to-day activities within own area of responsibility to maintain service continuity and quality.
  • Support the implementation of service improvements and new ways of working.

Essential

Qualifications
Essential
  • MPharm degree or equivalent accredited pharmacy qualification.
  • Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)

Desirable
  • Evidence of post-registration training or foundation pharmacist development
  • Independent Prescribing qualification.

Skills and knowledge
Essential
  • Sound knowledge of medicines legislation, dispensing processes and safe medicines use.
  • Ability to apply clinical and medicines knowledge within defined protocols, policies and guidelines in routine practice.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to provide clear advice to patients and colleagues.

Desirable
  • Knowledge of NHS primary care systems, clinical IT systems or prescribing workflows

Experience
Essential
  • Experience of dispensing and clinically screening prescriptions, including resolving routine queries and applying professional judgement within legal and professional requirements.
  • Experience working within a pharmacy or primary care healthcare setting, contributing to day-to-day service delivery.
  • Experience of liaising with prescribers, patients or other healthcare professionals to support safe and effective medicines use.

Desirable
  • Experience within NHS primary care, GP practice, PCN or OOH services.
  • Experience of using clinical systems and managing prescribing or medicines-related queries.
