Job summary
The Doncaster Older Adult mental health ward Windermere Lodge are looking to recruit a Band 6 Occupational Therapist who has experience of working within the specialism of mental health.

The ward is a 20 bedded mixed ward providing inpatient care to patients who are aged 65+ with both organic and functional mental illness. The role plays an integral part in ensuring that the whole multi-disciplinary team works to support patients to engage in meaningful occupations which promote good mental and physical health, assist recovery and help patients achieve their personal goals - such as being able to manage daily living skills, engage in vocational, leisure and educational opportunities and participate in community activities.

Main duties of the job
To carry out assessments and interventions, utilising the OT process, from initial assessment to discharge planning and evaluation.

Communicate complex, sensitive, distressing and contentious information effectively and compassionately with service users, carers, and staff in the multi-disciplinary team and other agencies.

To establish links with community mental health team occupational therapists and colleagues to ensure service users' ongoing occupational needs are addressed along with support to access to resources in the wider community as part of a safe effective discharge.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Diploma / Degree in Occupational Therapy.
  • Registration with Health and Care Professions Council.
  • Practice Placement Educator Qualification
  • Willingness to undertake post-graduate study relevant to service area

Experience
Essential
  • Post registration experience in mental health services.
  • Supervisory responsibility for staff.
  • Documented evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Experience of a range of mental health settings and varied aspects of practice

Desirable
  • Experience of research, service evaluation and audit procedures.

Knowledge
Essential
  • Specialist knowledge and application of occupational therapy assessments and interventions relevant to client group
  • Understanding of occupational therapy outcome measures.
  • Detailed knowledge of mental health legislation and current practice.
  • Knowledge of principles of recovery, trauma informed practice and person centred approaches to care.
  • Applied knowledge of mental health legislation including CPA and risk assessment and management.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation.
  • Detailed knowledge of clinical governance and its application.
  • Ability to analyse and draw conclusions about professional and ethical issues.

Skills
Essential
  • Extensive demonstrable clinical experience including individual and group work.
  • Good communication skills - written and verbal.
  • Ability to organise and respond efficiently to complex information.
  • Ability to work autonomously and set own priorities
  • Ability to build effective multidisciplinary/agency working relationships.
