Job summary
We are recruiting one part-time (8.5 PAs) substantive Consultant in Clinical Oncology to join the Oncology team at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder would be expected to work in two main tumour sites, potentially with involvement in the acute oncology service.

The need for the department is for the post holder to provide and continue to develop, depending on the candidate, oncology services for patients with lung and thyroid cancer across West Berkshire.

Main duties of the job
The successful applicants will support the current delivery of Oncology including contribution to the development of these services at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. The appointee will join the existing team to provide specialist care to this growing population of patients, and raise departmental profiles through teaching and education.

The aim of the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust's Oncology Service is to become a leader in the field of Oncology management and the successful applicant must therefore have the pre-requisite procedural and leadership skills as well as teamwork, drive and ambition to succeed in achieving these goals.

This is a part-time post with 6.75 Programmed Activities for Direct Clinical Care (DCCs). The initial SPA allocation will be 1.5 per week however this may increase as additional responsibility is taken on.

There is an expectation that the successful candidate will work flexibly with colleagues to ensure the maintenance of a continuing high quality service meeting patient needs and to raise departmental profiles through teaching and education.

Applicants are required to have full GMC registration, and either be on the Specialist Register or be within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT/EU equivalent certification at the time of interview.

The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest District General Hospitals in the country. The hospital achieved Foundation Trust status on 1st June 2006 and was the first Foundation Trust in the South Central Strategic Health Authority. The Trust is Reading's biggest employer and may form the central hospital for one of the country's new medical schools.

Education & Qualifications
Essential
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • MRCP or equivalent

Desirable
  • Higher degree e.g. PhD/ MD submitted/awarded Clinical Experience, Knowledge & Skills

Clinical Experience, Knowledge and Skills
Essential
  • Fully trained in Clinical Oncology
  • Previous responsibility for clinical governance and GMC Good Medical Practice
  • Good practical clinical skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Experience in research

Desirable
  • An area of special interest that could serve or be developed with the current service
  • Advanced communication skills training
  • Advanced life support

Audit Management & IT
Essential
  • Ability to work within clinical governance guidelines
  • Undertake audits and present data as required
  • Good IT skills, use of patient and hospital database
  • Ability to manage risk and end of life decisions

Desirable
  • Able to manage and lead change internally and within multi-agency setting

Research, Teaching Skill & Experience
Essential
  • Essential evidence of participation in research
  • Experience of teaching juniors, medical students and other healthcare professionals

Desirable
  • Evidence of peer work submitted for review
  • Proven teaching abilities
