Job summary
Applications are invited for the post of Consultant in Anaesthesia at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH). 6.25 Programmed Activities will be offered - 5.25 Direct Clinical Care and 1 Supporting Professional Activities. The specific job plan will be developed in partnership between the needs of the department and the successful applicant. It is expected that the initial job plan will be reviewed after 6 months of service. Initial job plan will include sessions within all major units at the RNOH including the peripheral nerve injury unit, sarcoma unit, joint replacement unit, spinal unit, shoulder unit, foot & ankle unit and the preoperative assessment department. Candidates must be able to demonstrate clinical experience at either fellowship or consultant level for anaesthesia for complex orthopaedic and spinal surgery. Job plans may be changed to accommodate where possible the specific requests of the candidate and the needs of the department.

Currently the Trust permits flexibility in time and space to accommodate SPAs

Main duties of the job
Non-fixed commitments include:

• To join the team of consultant anaesthetists who provide anaesthesia at RNOH
• To provide pre and post-operative care
• To participate in the teaching of trainee anaesthetists
• To participate in postgraduate academic meetings of the anaesthetic department and departmental audit
• To attend consultant administrative departmental meetings
• To undertake audit of personal practice
• To improve service delivery and participate with clinical governance in line with local and national guidelines
• To undertake research

Job responsibilities
The postholder will be expected to maintain the highest clinical standards in the practice of anaesthesia and will undertake any reasonable clinical responsibility which relates to providing anaesthesia services.

The postholder will be expected to be actively involved in the management of the department including attendance at the anaesthetic department meetings, MDT and regular morning meetings. They will be expected to take an active and engaged role in departmental and academic responsibilities as allocated by agreement across the department, including cover for colleagues annual leave and other authorised absences as appropriate.

The successful applicant will engage fully and proactively in clinical governance activities, including clinical audit.

The postholder will be expected to engage in continuing professional development.

A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and their Clinical Director on behalf of the Chief Medical Officer prior to the commencement date of the appointment.

The job plan shall be reviewed annually. It will cover all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities, including a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external.

It shall also include personal objectives, including details of their link to wider service objectives and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfill the job plan and the objectives.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

• FRCA or GMC recognised equivalent qualification
• Full GMC Registration
• Entry on GMC specialist register with CCT or equivalent (proposed CCT/CESR date must be within 6 months of interview)
• ALS and ATLS
• Basic medical qualifications - MBBS or equivalent
• Experience at Consultant level in anaesthesia for specialist orthopaedic and complex sarcoma surgery

Desirable

• Leadership experience - e.g. including evidence of formal management training, a track record of leading teams effectively, managing change successfully and implementing service improvements.
• Evidence of contributing to research (i.e. local lead for regional / national studies, experience with recruiting patients to RCTs, up to date with GCP)

Knowledge
Essential

• Understanding of principles of clinical governance
• Consultant role in ensuring patient safety.
• Evidence of understanding the importance of GMC good medical practice and appraisal and revalidation.

Skills
Essential

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Competent in all aspects of skills appropriate to the role.
• Computer literacy/IT skills
• Ability to effectively supervise junior medical staff
• Track record of establishing and maintaining good working relationships with patients, carers and multidisciplinary colleagues.
• Understanding of wellbeing

• Experience in effectively delivering training / teaching nursing and medical staff
• Experience in conflict management and able to motivate colleagues (medical and non medical)

• Knowledge and experience of Quality Improvement (QI) methodology / audit / service improvement work
