Job summary
Applications are invited for a nurse with a special interest in Research & Development (R&D), based at the Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Trust. An exciting opportunity has arisen in the surgical research team.

As a team member you will be working on cutting edge research protocols aiming to deliver research opportunities to patients and forging forward medical treatments, procedures and technologies. In addition, there is recognition that to successfully recruit and retain research professionals a flexible and varied approach to job planning is preferred. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that encourages Research & Development and Innovation whilst maintaining skills and developing services that deliver excellent patient care

Ideally we are looking for a nurse with experience in any field of medicine, surgery and research, looking for a new challenge and the desire to expand their knowledge base and their career within the field of clinical research.

Main duties of the job
The role of the Research Nurse (RN) /Clinical Research Practitioner (CRP) at The Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (RSFT) involves working with multidisciplinary teams to screen patients for research studies, monitor patients during studies, assist with clinical investigations as well as the collection and documentation of accurate data. As a band 5 RN/CRP you will work under the supervision of senior nursing staff and collaboratively with the multidisciplinary teams to manage a caseload of trial patients.

The post holder will be organised, have a flexible approach to work and be motivated to provide excellent clinical care with exceptional communication and organisational skills. This post is one year Fixed Term and renewal is dependent on research funding.

Secondments will be considered.

As a band 5 RN you will work under the supervision of senior nursing staff and collaboratively with the multidisciplinary teams to manage a caseload of trial patients. The role involves using an in depth knowledge of trial protocols and their application in practice alongside a working knowledge and compliance with local, national and international research regulations.

Research To assist with research across specialties. To work collaboratively with other members of the MDT, Research Governance teamand coordinating teams in the provision of clinical research. To liaise with the relevant support services within the trust. To ensure that all clinical studies are set up and run in accordance with ICH GCP(Good Clinical Practice). To assist in the identification and screening of suitable eligible subjects for researchstudies. To identify barriers to recruitment and develop action plans to overcome the barriers. To facilitate the informed consent process for trials in conjunction with the PrincipalInvestigator ensuring the following is accounted for:o Participants fully understand the nature of the clinical study.

Participants are aware that entry into the study is voluntary and they canwithdraw at any point without it affecting their care.o Participants are aware of all the procedures required by the clinical study.o The consent form is completed accurately and filed as required. Organize all necessary investigations for subjects in research studies. To assist with cannulation and blood sampling during those investigations. To assist with processing (e.g. centrifugation), transfer and storage of blood samples. To assist with other measurements from subjects during the trial period. Ensure research data is collected accurately and sent to the study coordinatingcenter in a timely manner. To ensure all equipment used for the research studies (eg infusion pumps) ismaintained as required and a maintenance record is kept. To attend meetings and training relevant to the job. To be responsible for the ordering of all clinical supplies for research. Contribute to the management of the local portfolio.

Qualifications
Essential
  • NMC Level One Registration
  • Ability to work autonomously and as a member of a small team, as well as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team.
  • Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development

Desirable
  • AHCS registration (if CRP) - or evidence of working towards
  • Health care certificate (if CRP)
  • Mentorship qualification
  • Relevant post registration qualification
  • Relevant diploma/degree

Knowledge
Essential
  • Significant clinical/research experience
  • Experience of multidisciplinary working and collaborating with other agencies
  • Management of resources
  • Evidence of continuous personal, professional and academic development
  • Ability to work autonomously and as a member of a small team, as well as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team.
  • Knowledge and experience of handling complex relationships

Desirable
  • Clinical trials experience
