Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for band 5 paediatric staff nurses to join our team as we are expanding our workforce in the Emergency Department.

Are you highly motivated and an enthusiastic nurse looking for a new challenge? Come and join our fabulous team of healthcare professionals in the Emergency Department at the Royal United Hospitals Bath.

The Children's Emergency Department sits within the main ED footprint, but within a separate, dedicated unit.

The department comprises of a child-friendly waiting area, complete with breastfeeding/baby room and teen waiting area, paediatric triage room, clinician assessment rooms and patient bedspaces, all designed with the child and family in mind. There is also a paediatric resus room within the resuscitation area of the department.

Staffed by registered children's nurses and paediatric emergency medicine clinicians, the department sees 19,000 children and young people aged 0-18 each year with a wide range of urgent and emergency illnesses and injuries.

Main duties of the job
Patient Care Responsibilities
1 To maintain accountability for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care within the framework of team nursing.
2 To provide holistic, family-centred and child-focussed care.
Professional Development and Education Responsibilities
1 To develop own teaching skills and participate in staff/student education programmes.
2 To complete professional portfolio demonstrating reflective practice.
Research and Development Responsibilities
1 To promote nursing practice in line with relevant research.
2 To maintain and promote an awareness of evidence-based practice and participate in its implementation.
3 To contribute to research and development programmes within the ward/department.
Audit, Quality and Risk Management Responsibilities
1 To contribute to the setting and monitoring of measurable standards of care and be accountable for maintaining standards.
2 To maintain awareness of the national, professional and local quality issues relevant to the delivery of nursing services. e.g Clinical Governance.
3 To uphold quality initiatives that improves 'customer care' and enhances the interface between staff, patients and visitors.
Resource Management Responsibilities
1 To develop and maintain an awareness of budgeting, exercising care and economy in the ordering and use of equipment, supported by written documentation where applicable.

Job description

What we can offer you:

Paediatric staff nurses work exclusively within the Children's Emergency Department and are supported to gain a wide variety of emergency nursing skills, including triage, cannulation and venepuncture, ECG, plastering and resus skills. We provide in-house PILS training for all staff, and all paediatric nurses are supported to become APLS providers.

We support nurses seeking a career pathway and provide development opportunities. Staff are supported by a Clinical Practice Facilitator and are part of a Band 7 Senior Sister/Charge Nurse development and appraisal group.

We are enhancing our orientation and education programme to ensure that our staff received not only the extended clinical skills and knowledge that they require but also to ensure that have the personal support to work in a challenging clinical environment.

We have a proactive education programme within the Emergency Department and staff are supported and encouraged to develop the many skills and knowledge required to look after our diverse patient group.

Staff are also encouraged to be part of the many Quality Improvement projects that we facilitate in-house with support from the Quality Improvement Centre.

Person Specification
Knowledge
Essential
  • relevant clinical experience at Band 5
  • Thorough and up-to-date knowledge of nursing theory and best practice, particularly within specialty area and the application of this in practice

Qualifications and Training
Essential
  • Registered Nurse RSCN/RN child
  • State Registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council
  • Emergency Care qualification or equivalent evidenced experience
  • Demonstrates evidence of ongoing continuous professional development
  • Teaching qualification

Desirable
  • Post-registration training preferably in speciality area - APLS, PILS, TNCC/ATLS preferable
  • Any training in management / HR
  • Diploma/ Degree in relevant area
