Main duties of the job
Working as a Health Care Assistant in the Emergency Department is fast-paced, varied, and rewarding. Typical duties include:

Patient Care & Support

• Assisting patients with personal care needs (washing, toileting, feeding, repositioning).
• Providing comfort, reassurance, and emotional support to patients and their families.

Clinical Support

• Recording and monitoring patient observations (blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygen saturation).
• Taking and recording ECGs.
• Assisting with wound care, plastering, dressings, and other minor procedures under supervision.
• Supporting the resuscitation team during emergencies.

Emergency & Acute Care Assistance

• Safely transferring and escorting patients within the department (e.g., to X-ray, CT, or wards).
• Assisting with patient triage and flow through the department.
• Supporting patients with mobility, using aids or equipment as required.

Administrative & Communication Duties

• Updating patient records accurately and promptly.
• Communicating effectively with patients, relatives, and the wider ED team.

Environmental & Safety Duties

• Maintaining cleanliness and ensuring equipment is stocked and ready for use.
• Following infection prevention and control procedures at all times.
• Ensuring patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality are upheld.

Essential

• NVQ level 2 Direct care
• NVQ level 3 Direct care
• Key skills - literacy and numeric

Desirable

• Basic First Aid Certificate
• Food Handling Certificate

Experience
Essential

• Relevant experience working in a hospital or other heath care environment, in the NHS.
• Demonstrable experience of working as part of a team.

Desirable

• Working in a health care setting or demonstrable experience of undertaking a caring role
• Venepuncture/cannulation skills
• ECG completion skills
• News training/skills
