Job summaryWe have an exciting opportunity for you to join the multidisciplinary team at G1 Ward (specialist dementia unit) as a full-time permanent (37.5 hours per week) Band 5 Occupational Therapist. We are supportive of flexible working patterns.
We are looking forward to hearing from newly qualified Occupational Therapists or existing band 5 Occupational Therapists who have an interest in further developing their clinical expertise within older adults mental health services. As a member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team you will undertake occupational assessments, formulations and care planning. You will deliver interventions on a 1 to 1 and group basis to achieve therapeutic goals which are appropriate to individual's needs. There is also opportunity to be involved in the service development work on the ward.
You will be provided with regular supervision from the band 6 Occupational Therapist. Newly qualified occupational therapists will be supported with preceptorship. CPD opportunities are available to enhance your professional development.
Main duties of the job- To provide an occupational therapy service to a defined caseload of inpatients using evidence based/client centred principles to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions in hospital, community settings and on home visits.
- To maintain clinical records.
- To develop skills and knowledge through participation in preceptorship and PDR.
- To support with the learning of Occupational Therapy students on practice placement.
- With support to participate in the development and evaluation of Occupational Therapy Service on the ward.

Job responsibilitiesClinical- To undertake occupational therapy assessments for a designated caseload, addressing occupational performance and skill deficits, enabling the client in areas of self-maintenance, productivity and leisure.
- To work with clients to identify OT goals as part of the overall care plan.
- To plan and implement individual and/or group interventions, in collaboration with the client, using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals.
- To monitor and evaluate treatment in order to measure progress and ensure effectiveness of the intervention.
- To undertake frequent therapeutic moving and handling of clients and equipment, utilising moderate physical effort within clinical and non clinical settings.
- To work with clients, carers and relatives who may have distressing social/clinical circumstances.
- To demonstrate an understanding of the effect of disability and recommend adaptations to the clients social and physical environment.
- To provide occupational therapy services in working conditions which may be hazardous e.g. exposure to body fluids, aggressive persons, visits to high risk areas and associated travel risks.
Communication- To establish effective communication networks with users and carers, team members, OT colleagues and other agencies.
- To participate or work as a member of the multidisciplinary team, contributing to decisions with regard to client care programmes.
- To provide support and education to clients and carers regarding aspects of occupational therapy eg equipment fitting, rehab programmes.
- To develop skills in communicating complex sensitive and contentious information to clients and carers as appropriate.
- To promote awareness of the role of Occupational Therapy within the team and locally.
Documentation- To ensure that up to date written and electronic records and activity data are maintained in accordance with Professional and Trust standards.
Professional ethics- To comply with the COT Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and national and local policies and procedures.
- To respect the individuality, values, cultural and religious diversity of clients and contribute to the provision of a service sensitive to these needs.
Leadership, supervision and appraisal- To review and reflect on own practice and performance through effective use of professional and operational supervision and appraisal.
Training staff and students- To participate in the induction, training and education of students and other staff in this setting.
Service development and delivery- To participate in the planning, evaluation and audit of practice, clinical pathways and protocols within your area.
- To participate in the delivery of the OT development plan.
Professional development- To apply acquired skills and knowledge of professional practice in order to develop fitness to practise as an OT.
- To maintain a professional portfolio for CPD recording learning outcomes through participation in relevant development opportunities and achieve preceptorship.
Clinical governance, quality, standards- To contribute to the Sheffield Health Partnership University Trusts and teams clinical governance arrangements and quality agenda.
- To demonstrate awareness and personal responsibility with regard to Health and Safety.
- To demonstrate understanding of national guidelines and legislation relating to health and social care and their impact on service provision.
Self and resource management- To exercise good personal time management, punctuality and consistent reliable attendance.
- To be responsible for maintaining stock, advising on resources to carry out the job, including the responsible management of petty cash as appropriate.
Research and practice development- To demonstrate the ability to critically evaluate current research and apply to practice.
The post holder will be required:- To undertake any other duties, which may be allocated by the Occupational Therapy Clinical Lead within the general scope of the post and appropriate to the grade.
- To work flexibly which can include evenings and weekends.
- To maintain existing skills and develop/receive training in new skills as required to carry out the work of the Trust.

Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- Diploma/degree in Occupational Therapy
Knowledge and skillsEssential- Ability to assess complex health and well being needs as an Occupational therapist
- Ability to develop monitor and review care/treatment plans to meet assessed need in relation to the post applied for
- Ability to keep accurate and concise records
- Basic knowledge of the principles of clinical governance
- The ability to monitor and prioritise own workload and work as an effective member of a team
