The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw (SYB) Pathology Network is a fully integrated network providing pathology services across five regional sites – Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (BHFT), Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (DBTHFT), The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust (TRHFT), Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT), and Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (STHFT). We are inviting applications from enthusiastic, driven individuals to join our Haematology teams at the Rotherham site. The post is based at Rotherham but the successful applicant will also be required to work on the Barnsley Hospital Trust site and, as an SYBP employee, may be required to work on the other Pathology sites within the SYBP Network. Main duties of the job
The post holder will act as an HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist providing scientific services to patients as an aid to clinical diagnosis. The successful candidate will be employed on Agenda for Change terms and conditions and required to participate on the 24/7 out of hours rota and undertake a wide range of complex analytical procedures, performing a range of manual, semi-automated and automated tests using scientific knowledge and experience to comment upon and validate results in line with ISO 15189. Suitable candidates will require Haematology experience post-registration and ideally have experience of working out of hours. Candidates must be in possession of an IBMS specialist portfolio in either Haematology or Blood Sciences, or equivalent to be appointed at Band 6. However, registered candidates either working towards or aspiring to complete their specialist portfolio will be considered for appointment at band 5.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential
  • IBMS accredited BSC in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent (Band 5&6)
  • Registered with HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist (Band 5&6)
  • Completion of IBMS post graduate registration portfolio or equivalent (Band 5)
  • IBMS Specialist Diploma in a relevant specialist subject (Band 6)
  • Commitment to complete and maintain Mandatory Training and required Laboratory competencies (Band 5&6)
  • Commitment to complete the relevant Specialist BMS IBMS portfolio (Band 5)
  • Commitment to continuous professional development required to maintain HCPC registration (Band 6)

Desirable
  • Evidence of continued CPD including relevant courses with regards to H&S, leadership, quality or training (Band 5&6)

Experience
Essential
  • Experience with a range of laboratory techniques (Band 5&6)
  • Detailed understanding of job content (Band 6)
  • Ability to work with other colleagues to improve and develop working practices (Band 6)
  • Discipline specific NHS experience in a UKAS accredited laboratory (Microbiology/Virology/Histopathology/ Blood sciences laboratory) (Band 6)
  • Multi - disciplinary awareness (Band 6)
  • Experience with a wide range of laboratory techniques in use across discipline (Band 6)
  • Experience working within a laboratory providing local, regional or national tertiary reference facilities (Band 6)
  • Experience in the implementation of new methodologies and /or equipment (Band 6)
  • Experience with the UKAS accreditation process (Band 6)
  • Experience in demonstrating leadership qualities (Band 6)

Desirable
  • Discipline specific NHS laboratory experience (Band 5)
  • Multi - disciplinary awareness (Band 5)
  • Experience in demonstrating leadership qualities (Band 5)

Skills
Essential
  • Keyboard and basic IT skills (Band 5&6)
  • Have an awareness of Health & Safety issues (Band 5&6)
  • Can communicate effectively with staff of all grades (Band 5&6)
  • Evidence of effective time management skills and with a methodical approach (Band 6)
  • Evidence of good manual dexterity (Band 6)
