Job summary
Are you an experienced Non-Medical Prescriber looking to make a meaningful impact in children and young people's mental health? Join our National Deaf CAMHS (South West) team as a Band 7 Specialist Practitioner / Non-Medical Prescriber and become part of a unique, psychology-led service supporting deaf children, young people and their families across the region. This is a rare opportunity to work within a bilingual, bicultural multidisciplinary team, delivering high-quality, person-centred care while developing specialist expertise in Deaf mental health and neurodevelopmental pathways such as ADHD and autism. You'll be supported by a Consultant Child Psychiatrist and an experienced MDT, with excellent opportunities for training, development and national collaboration. We offer flexible working, including home-based working options, alongside regional travel across the South West. British Sign Language (BSL) experience isn't required -- full training will be provided.

Main duties of the job
  • Deliver highly specialist assessments, formulations and interventions for deaf children and young people
  • Act as a Non-Medical Prescriber, providing medication reviews within a holistic, MDT-led approach
  • Hold and manage a clinical caseload, including keyworking responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with families using a "Think Family" approach to care
  • Provide consultation, advice and training to education, health and social care professionals
  • Contribute to service development, audit, research and innovation
  • Offer clinical supervision and leadership to junior colleagues, trainees and wider team members
  • Deliver care that promotes equality, inclusion, recovery and positive mental health outcomes
  • Undertake risk assessment and safeguarding work, ensuring safe, effective care

Job description
As a Band 7 Non-Medical Prescriber within National Deaf CAMHS, you will work as an autonomous practitioner within a supportive multidisciplinary team, delivering specialist mental health care to a complex and diverse caseload.

Clinical Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist mental health assessment, formulation and evidence-based interventions for children and young people
  • Prescribe and review medication in collaboration with the Consultant Psychiatrist, ensuring safe and effective treatment planning
  • Develop and implement individualised care plans, considering developmental, systemic and cultural factors
  • Build strong therapeutic relationships with young people, families and carers
  • Undertake risk assessments, safeguarding work and care planning, contributing to MDT decision-making
  • Monitor and evaluate clinical outcomes, adapting interventions where required
  • Communicate complex and sensitive information clearly, including when working with interpreters

Team and Service Contribution
  • Play an active role in multidisciplinary teamwork, including joint assessments and shared care planning
  • Provide consultation and specialist advice to external agencies such as schools, social care and local CAMHS teams
  • Contribute to service development initiatives, helping shape provision for Deaf young people
  • Participate in audit, research and quality improvement activities
  • Represent the service in regional and national forums as required

Leadership and Professional Development
  • Provide clinical supervision, mentoring and training to colleagues and students
  • Maintain high professional standards in line with regulatory and organisational guidance
  • Engage in ongoing professional development, with access to specialist training and networks
  • Support a positive team culture, contributing to staff wellbeing and service excellence

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Recognised professional qualification in nursing, social work or occupational therapy and Evidence of continuous post-qualifying professional development
  • Current registration with the relevant body
  • Qualified as a Non-Medical Prescriber
Desirable
  • Trained in therapeutic interventions such as FBT, DBT, CBT or other specialist eating disorder interventions.

Experience
Essential
  • Experience of working in CAMHS and with families/carers and young people with mental health difficulties
  • Knowledge and experience of utilising therapeutic interventions with children with mental health difficulties
  • Experience of carrying out a role as a non-medical prescriber.
  • Experience of working with children, young people with mental health difficulties.
Desirable
  • Knowledge or experience in working with deaf young people and their families
  • Experience of working with clients with high risk presentations within CAMHS settings, such as self-harm, suicidal thoughts and actions and harm to others
  • Experience of supporting junior qualified and non-qualified staff members.
  • Experience of working across service settings and agencies
