Job summary
This post is to provide joint multi-disciplinary consultant leadership for the regionally commissioned community Forensic Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (FCAMHS) covering the 12 boroughs within the South London Partnership (SLP). The FCAMHS team and, therefore, this post will be managed by SLAM and the postholder will be accountable to the Lead Clinician for National and Specialist CAMHS (ultimately to the SLAM Medical Director). This is a replacement for an established post.

The successful applicant will be working 6 PAs and the expectation is that they will be working across the SLP in a flexible manner, although based in SLaM.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will work closely with the wider team to deliver multidisciplinary consultations, assessments, and a small number of interventions to young people, their families and professional networks.

The post holder will be required to maintain Section 12 and Approved Clinician Status, to provide consultant clinical leadership to the multi-disciplinary team.

The post holder will provide consultation but also (as described above) work directly with children, adolescents and their families using specialist knowledge and expertise; they will prepare timely assessment and review reports and maintain and ensure high service standards for safeguarding, adherence to relevant legislation (including Mental Health Act, Children's Act & Mental Capacity Act) and progressive clinical practice.

Job responsibilities
The post-holder and the Consultant Clinical Psychologist will be responsible for:
  • Provision of specialist child and adolescent forensic mental health expertise in advising, formal consultation, assessment and intervention. The postholder would be expected to participate in two multiagency consultation clinics per week.
  • Providing advice and consultation to partner agencies regarding the diagnosis, management and treatment of children and adolescents who need consultant psychiatric intervention
  • The majority of clinical work will be single consultations regarding a young person. As such there is are minimal follow up cases and a small active caseload for the postholder.
  • Provision of advice to local CAMHS and other agencies regarding appropriate risk assessment and management in high-risk cases involving young people presenting risk of harm to others
  • Active involvement with the families and carers of young people referred to the service
  • Active liaison with a wide range of professionals and agencies working with children and young people especially those involved in juvenile criminal justice.
  • Development of an active leadership role within his/her area of specialist competence in the catchment area for which he/she is responsible. This will involve the development of good relationships with senior professionals in CAMHS and other agencies, identification of gaps in provision for young people and a capacity for service development and innovation.
  • Provision of clinical leadership within the multidisciplinary regional FCAMHS team and to collaborate in systems of supervision and care management. The consultant will offer consultation and joint working with other professionals wherever possible but will also have the capacity to work autonomously when this is required.
  • Provision of a prompt response to all referrals, in conjunction with the wider team. The team receives circa 100 new referrals per year for consultation.
  • Working in partnership with local multidisciplinary teams and other agencies to ensure clinical management of patients in relation to the care programme approach (CPA).
  • Provision of reciprocal cross-cover for consultant psychiatrist for annual leave, unplanned leave and for short term sickness etc, and in the normal working week)
  • Urgent clinical work is undertaken by the whole multi-disciplinary team, including the consultant, during normal working hours. The consultant provides senior medical cover, together with the other consultants for the sector/service.

Person Specification

Training and Experience
Essential
  • Completion of Higher Psychiatric Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
  • Equivalent training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (CESR issued by PMETB)
  • Experience in psychopharmacology and assessing + treating complex neuropsychiatric conditions
  • Experience in clinical leadership and service development

Desirable
  • Approved qualifications in relevant therapeutic practice e.g. DBT, CBT or Family Therapy
  • Experience of psychopharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment modalities in children with mental illness in intellectual disability and autism and physical illness
  • Experience in Paediatrics
  • Inpatient experience
  • Experience in liaison psychiatry liaison psychiatry
  • Experience in liaison psychiatry liaison psychiatry
  • Experience in the use of ADOS, ADI-r

Qualifications
Essential
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • CCT or within 6 months of accreditation)
  • Full GMC Registration and inclusion on Specialist GMC Register
  • Sec 12 (2) and AC approved (or undertaking to obtain this before taking up the post
  • Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or Equivalent

  • Demonstrated clinical skills in specialist area of intellectual disability/developmental neuropsychiatry / autism and psychopharmacology
  • Demonstrated clinical skills child and adolescent psychiatry
  • Must have experience in dealing with children with eating disorders and associated comorbidities in community day programmes and inpatient settings
  • Advanced knowledge of the theory and practice of specialist psychological therapies for young people with eating disorders and their families
  • Experience and knowledge of multi-disciplinary, multi-agency working with children with complex, multi-system disease
  • Experience of safeguarding, governance and legislation issues specific to children with eating disorders and associated comorbidities
  • Experience working in specialist eating disorders teams and co-working with social care, and education
  • Competence in risk management
  • Competence in non-medication therapeutic approaches
