Job summary
Lambeth Operational Directorate is offering an exciting opportunity for a proactive and proficient Inpatient Matron.

This is an exciting post that allows for close working and collaboration with senior management and clinicians in the future development of the directorate. The successful post holder will be based at the Lambeth Directorate and will be an integral part of the Nursing, Quality and Assurance Team.

The successful candidates will have exceptional communication, motivational and influencing skills being able to influence and encourage teams to work across organisational boundaries whilst holding patient care at the heart of their work.

The candidates will need to be passionate about the delivery of high-quality patient care and have experience in leadership. The post holder will be a 'self-starter' and be able to work autonomously as well as part of a multi professional team.

Main duties of the job
We are particularly interested in hearing from positive, motivated, dynamic and enthusiastic applicants who enjoy participating in a range of quality improvement activities with staff and patients. The Matron will provide expert advice, support and visible leadership to all staff driving the quality agenda throughout services.

Job responsibilities
The post holder will deliver on the Matrons 10 responsibilities:
  • Leading by example
  • Making sure patients get quality care
  • Ensuring staffing is appropriate to patient needs
  • Empowering nurses to take on a wider range of clinical tasks
  • Improving hospital/team cleanliness
  • Ensuring patients nutritional needs are met
  • Improving on patients experience (to include supporting teams in identification of ligatures and management plan regarding existing ligatures where patients are seen in outpatients)
  • Making sure patients are treated with respect
  • Preventing hospital-acquired infection when patients are admitted to the ward.
  • Resolving problems for patients and their relatives by building closer relationships

Qualifications
Essential
  • Registered Mental Nurse (RMN)
  • Master's Degree or equivalent experience.
  • Extensive post- registration continuing professional development.

Desirable
  • Higher degree
  • Mentorship qualification or EBN 998

Experience
Essential
  • Experience at a senior management level, including managing change and introducing new ways of working for mental health nurses.
  • Experience of multi-professional collaboration at a senior level
  • Experience of setting, monitoring and evaluating standards of care.
  • Experience of working in a multi-cultural environment and knowledge of methods to develop culturally sensitive practice
  • Current experience of relevant clinical practice, especially if working across different specialities
  • Quality improvement methodology, assessing and teaching.

Desirable
  • Experience of racial awareness/diversity training
  • Experience of participating in research projects.
  • Experience in working in acute inpatient services.

Skills
Essential
  • Knowledge of the current policy context and the implications for mental health nursing
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation and policies associated with Mental Health Care including MHA, CPA Procedures and Human Rights Act.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current policy issues and their implications for clinical environments.
  • Understanding of risk issues including Clinical and Health and Safety.
  • An appreciation of the special needs of patients from diverse cultural communities.

Desirable
  • Able to work on several projects simultaneously using project management skills.
  • Evidence of consultancy skills.
  • Able to identify key issues from complex documents and plan for operationalising same.
