Job summary
The post offers comprehensive experience in all aspects of the specialty including robotic surgery in a well-supported and closely supervised environment.

You will provide support to the Consultants within the General Surgery Unit (Colorectal) and participate in outpatient clinics, operating sessions and emergency on call. You will also supervise juniors within the department and will be involved in teaching. There is a potential opportunity to rotate between the sub-specialties mentioned above as necessary.

Whilst this post is not recognised for training purposes, the Trust are committed to providing a supportive learning environment to maximise your career potential. There is a well-established local teaching programme and it is expected that you will participate in these sessions. Time will be allocated to you for educational activities to broaden your knowledge and experience.

The posts are whole time with a 1:16 full shift pattern two tier rota.

Main duties of the job

About us
This is a busy acute General Surgical Unit dealing with a wide variety of elective and emergency surgery.

The colorectal surgery is mainly performed at The James Cook University Hospital. The unit provide care for broad range of colorectal procedures including all benign and cancer related to colorectal speciality. We have two dedicated laparoscopic theatres with ICG technology. In addition, we have established robotic training programme with existing established trainers. Rest of the colorectal surgeons are in the process of establishing robotic training.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council.
  • Passed MRCS Part A&B

Experience
Essential
  • Experience in General Surgery elective and emergency work
  • Evidence of clinical audit
  • Regular attendance at and participation in audit meetings
  • Used to working within the NHS and a team based structure.

Desirable
  • A range of General Surgery experience
  • Experience of teaching medical and other staff

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
Essential
  • Evidence of core clincial knowledge, operative and diagnostic skills in managing urological patients in the emergency and elective settings as a Registrar in surgery.

Desirable
  • An understanding of clinical governance
  • Clear evidence of intention to specialise in surgery
