Job summary
We are looking for an experienced clinician to join the CAMHS Emergency Care Service for children and young people presenting across 3 hospitals in the boroughs of Merton, Sutton, Richmond, Kingston and Wandsworth with self-harm and in mental health crisis. The post holder will undertake a range of therapeutic tasks which will include:
  • Assessment of children and young person's presenting with self-harm, suicidality and mental health crisis, at the A&E Departments or following admission to the paediatric wards.
  • Working with colleagues to provide training, education and support of A&E, Paediatric and Adult Psychiatric Liaison staff, through formal teaching and provision of active clinical leadership to the ward teams. Provide consultation and advice to ward teams with respect to management of complex cases.

You will be part of an innovative team with access to peer and group led supervision. With close working relationships with the community CAMHS team, access to MDT meetings and senior clinicians.

The post holder will be assigned a main area, however, will also be expected to travel to the CAMHS bases in Wandsworth, Richmond, Kingston, Sutton and Merton with acute hospital coverage of St George's, St Helier and Kingston hospitals.

Main duties of the job
Children and young people who are experiencing a mental health crisis and present to St Georges, Kingston and St Helier Hospital along with extending support to the Community CAMHS Teams in the boroughs of Merton, Sutton, Richmond, Kingston, and Wandsworth. The post holder will undertake a diverse set of therapeutic responsibilities, including: Providing comprehensive CAMHS Crisis assessments including therapeutic interventions for children and young people presenting with a mental health crisis at A&E Departments and following admission to paediatric wards. Offering community follow up appointments to review and plan ongoing care. Collaborating with colleagues to deliver training, educational programs, and support to A&E, Paediatric, and Adult Psychiatric Liaison personnel, incorporating formal teaching and active clinical leadership to ward teams.

Offering consultation and guidance to ward teams in the effective management of complex cases.

Actively participating in the ongoing development and enhancement of the service.

Job responsibilities
  • To undertake psychosocial assessment of young people presenting to acute hospitals in mental health crisis. Assessments will take place on the Paediatric wards and A&E Departments of St Georges, St Helier, and Kingston Hospital.
  • To liaise and consult with CAMHS colleagues to provide further specialist assessment if necessary.
  • To offer follow up appointments following initial assessment to review risk management plans and assess further support required. To provide links and transition support to other services as indicated.
  • To evaluate and make decisions about treatment options in consultation with teams across the Trust and wider agencies including social services, voluntary services, CAMHS teams, the Adolescent Outreach team, psychiatric inpatient wards, respectively.
  • To provide advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals working in other agencies and contribute to multi-agency care planning.
  • To provide clinical leadership of CAMHS cases to clinicians of the Paediatric wards, Adult Psychiatry Liaison teams and A&E staff.
  • To follow the assessment protocol and to complete the clinical record on the CAMHS Clinical Information System (IAPTUS) maintaining clinical records appropriately and in line with the Trust policy
  • To participate in regular clinical supervision.
  • To ensure high standards of verbal and written communication with all staff and clients that maximise user involvement in the delivery of care and treatment
  • To comply with London Child Protection Procedures on the management of child protection issues and those of South West London and St Georges Mental Health NHS Trust.

Person Specification
Experience
Essential
  • Demonstrable experience of working with young people who experience acute mental health problems.
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of assessing and managing crisis with mental health difficulties.
  • Experience of risk assessment and management
  • Experience of participation in case conferences and reviews
  • Evidence of continuing professional and personal development

Desirable
  • Working within an ethnically and racially diverse community
  • Experience of assessing deliberate self harm and suicidality presentations in young people
  • Experience of a range of therapeutic approaches
  • Experience of contributing to policy and procedure development and implementation
  • Experience of leading MDT/CPA/discharge planning meetings

Training & Qualifications
Essential
  • First level Qualification in Nursing, Occupational Therapy, Social work with related experience in supporting CYP with mental health needs.
  • Current registration with approved professional body.
  • Post qualification and registration experience of working in child and adolescent services

Desirable
  • Higher degree
  • Additional qualification in a treatment modality, e.g. DBT, CBT
