Job Summary
We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, inquisitive and experienced Band 6 Occupational Therapist, to join Wolfson outpatients' cognitive rehabilitation services (WOCRS) This is a 1.0 WTE, based at Queen Mary's hospital in Roehampton.

Using an empowerment-based approach you will work as part of an IDT to support patients to develop and progress with their goals, providing intensive treatment in both individual and group-based activities.

This post offers the opportunity to develop your clinical specialist skills in the area of cognitive rehabilitation and specialist Occupational Therapy assessment and treatment to patients with a wide range of diagnoses including stroke, acquired brain injury and long-term conditions.

All applicants must have experience of working with an adult client group in neurological rehabilitation. You need to be a confident practitioner able to demonstrate good clinical reasoning skills and be a clear and considered communicator able to use a flexible problem-solving approach.

Main Duties of the Job
This role delivers specialist occupational therapy to the intensive day patient and assessment programme (WCAP) services of WOCRS.

The post holder is required to provide assessment and rehabilitation and needs to be responsible for own clinical workload.

The post holder will be required to:
  • Plan appropriate and complete assessment of patient's current level of function
  • Administer and interpret standardised cognitive assessments
  • Devise treatment plans supportive of discharge and achievement of GAS goals.
  • Plan and facilitate patient groups for insight raising and joint learning environments
  • Communicate assessment and treatment plans with patients and support networks dealing sensitively with distressing or emotional circumstances and being realistic about patient's expectations.
  • Provide clear and strong communication with patient, support network, external agencies, community colleagues and interdisciplinary team members in relation to patient treatment and participating in decisions made.
  • Keep up-to-date and accurate clinical records on observations, assessment, and treatment input to patient caseload within the Codes of Practice and professional guidelines for Occupational Therapy.
  • Develop an active knowledge of MCA and DOLS
  • Combined with the team, complete risk assessment informing safeguarding conversations

About Us
St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a large teaching Trust with one of the largest hospitals in Europe. As a Major Trauma Centre we are known for our excellence in stroke, neurorehabilitation, and acute neurosciences services.

Our neuro services are located across three sites: St George's Hospital in Tooting, Queen Mary's Hospital at Roehampton and the Wandsworth Community Services based at St John's Therapy Centre.

We work as an interdisciplinary team to support patients as they work to achieve their goals. The service is psychology led and uses an empowerment behavioural management approach. This is a framework used by the team across all treatment modalities, empowering the patients engagement in their rehabilitation.

We are a supportive and dynamic team with an established supervision and CPD programme. There is a regular programme of student placements both in occupational therapy and the wider team, along with established links to City University based at St George's Hospital.

  • Diploma / Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • HPC Registration
  • Continued Professional Development including evidence of reflective practice.

  • Fieldwork Educators Course
  • Attendance at recent post graduate courses relevant to the clinical field of neurology.

Experience - Essential
  • Previous NHS experience either as a qualified Occupational Therapist (substantive or locum) or as an undergraduate Occupational Therapy Student.
  • Post qualification experience in Neurology (stroke/TBI)
  • Working as part of a MDT
  • Ability to form a sound prognosis and advise other members of the MDT

Experience - Desirable
  • Post-qualification experience in a Neurorehab setting
  • Previous experience at band 6 level
  • Staff/student supervision/IPR
  • Teaching experience in in-service programs
  • Involvement in Clinical audit
  • Experience of the research process

Skills - Essential
  • Is up to date with professional practice and new research
  • Good assessment skills based on a sound clinical reasoning approach
  • Involvement in cognitive rehabilitation including groups
  • Use and interpretation of standardised cognitive assessments
  • Understanding of the principles of normal movement and the impact of cognition and perception on function.
  • Have an understanding of setting, monitoring and evaluation of short and long term goals
  • Ability to work under pressure / accept responsibility
  • Good team player

  • A good understanding of positive risk management to support cognitive patients engagement in rehabilitation
  • Able to articulate what MCA and DOLS are in regard to the cognitive patients
  • Understanding of safeguarding process and when to raise with senior staff.
  • Understand the legal responsibilities of the working as a healthcare professional
  • Understanding of Quality and Audit initiatives, including Clinical Governance
  • Able to work within Trust's policies of data protection, equal opportunities and Health and Safety to meet the needs of the patients

Knowledge - Desirable
  • Previous participation in completion of DRS checklist
