Lipid Clinical Nurse Specialist

Stockport Foundation Trust is seeking a highly motivated nurse to join their Endocrine Service. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivery of patient services for the lipid clinic including patient follow up, Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) patient review and management, Lipid related advice and guidance, educational support to primary care providers of Lipidaemia conditions in the community.

Main duties of the job
The Specialist Nurse will be responsible for assisting the Lead Consultant in the management of patients attending the Lipid clinic, advice and guidance related to the service and the education of healthcare colleagues in the treatment of patients with lipid disorders.

The Specialist Nurse will provide:
  • Information on lipid disorders
  • Information on related genetics of known lipid disorders
  • Genetic counselling
  • General advice on management of cardiovascular risk factors
  • General support not only for the patient but for their family as well

The above would empower the patient, with the patient having increased knowledge about their condition enabling them to make informed choices about their care. Increased patient participation will lead to increased compliance with the regime agreed between clinician and patient, showing the benefit of shared care.

Education & Qualifications
Essential
  • 1st level registered Nurse - NMC
  • Nursing Degree/diploma level or equivalent experience.
  • Significant experience within the field of Lipid disorder &/or CHD
  • Evidence of continued professional Development
  • Evidence of master's level learning or working towards

Desirable
  • Non Medical Prescriber
  • Teaching and assessing qualification from NMC or equivalent

Knowledge
Essential
  • Knowledge of treatments for Familial Hypercholesterolaemia
  • Evidence of research and audit skills
  • Ability to analyse research findings to inform practice development
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience of providing advice and training to GP's and other healthcare professionals
  • Ability to inspire and motivate others
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team

Desirable
  • Counselling skills
  • Understanding of the Data Protection Act
  • Experience with cardiac risk assessment / lipidology

Experience
Essential
  • Evidence of leadership experience
  • Experience of teaching in various formats e.g. teaching packages developed, formal programmes delivered.
  • Experience of multi-professional working
  • Experience of audit and research e.g. patient experience, evidence base practice.

Desirable
  • Evidence of advanced communications skills e.g. dealing with conflict and delivering significant news.
  • Previous experience of working as a clinical nurse specialist

Skills & Abilities
Essential
  • Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Clear verbal and written communication Excellent organisation skills
  • Familiarity with databases and word processing, use of VDU's and digital technologies
  • Information Technology skills
  • 5 years post registration experience in cardiology / lipidology
  • Ability to use essential IT software packages e.g. E-mail, PowerPoint and Word
  • Ability to demonstrate leaderships skills within the nursing specialty
  • Ability to develop and deliver programmes of education and training
  • Ability to organise and negotiate workload and competing priorities within a department/ service

Desirable
  • Exemplar written skills demonstrating concise and accurate documentation
  • Ability to demonstrate a lead role in service development or managing change
  • Ability to deal with complex and difficult Proficient in Phlebotomy
  • Ability to manage change
  • Leadership and organisational skills
  • Outpatient clinic experience
