Job summary
This Post is for a Fixed Term Consultant Psychiatrist responsible for providing clinical input & leadership to Liaison Psychiatry for Working Age Adult based at Frimley Park Hospital & working alongside a multidisciplinary team in line with New Ways of Working.

The liaison service has been a well-established service providing liaison inputs for many years. In addition, the directorate offers Liaison Psychiatry services within Surrey's five major District General Hospitals. There has been considerable focus & interest in Liaison services by commissioners, & the post holder will work alongside the managers on directly influencing the delivery of services to the Acute Hospital to suit local needs in East Surrey, Epsom General, Frimley Park, Royal Surrey County & St. Peter's Hospitals.

Main duties of the job
The Consultant will support the existing staff in assessing, diagnosing & managing referrals for Working Age Adults presenting with mental health problems & to provide medical expertise & support to Frimley Park Hospital staff involved in looking after patients with adult mental health presentations.

In addition, the Consultant will supervise the clinical caseload of the team members & the work of any trainee doctors who may be attached to the service. The role will also support the existing liaison team in deciding the most appropriate intervention for patients referred to the service. This will include facilitating discharge planning & timely communication with Primary Care, CMHRSs or Inpatient Services. The clinical work will involve the assessment & psychiatric treatment of patients directly or through the supervision of other team members.

Person Specification

Qualifications
Essential
  • Full medical registration with a license to practice.
  • Approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act(or within 6 to 12 months of the time of interview/assessment) or equivalent
  • MBBS or equivalent recognised medical qualification

Desirable
  • Relevant higher degree e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Management qualification or evidence of an interest in developing leadership skills.

Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Essential
  • Knowledge of legislation, Department of Health Guidance and literature and its implications for clinical practice.
  • Knowledge of NHS strategic vision in the Next Stage Review (High-Quality Care for All)
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Make decisions based on evidence and experience, including the contribution of others
  • Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Experience working with various patient groups presenting with the full range of clinical severity across different care settings, including community, inpatient, and Specialty teams.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric provision

Desirable
  • Published audit or research projects

Eligibility
Essential
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.

Desirable
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within three months of appointment

Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning
Essential
  • Ability to take a clinical leadership role in a multidisciplinary team, ensuring high- quality care
  • Skills and sensitivity in negotiating with patients, relatives, and other professionals where opinions differ.
  • A high-level ability to effectively communicate complex and clinically sensitive information to patients, their families, carers, and a wide range of lay and professional people within and outside the NHS at both written and oral levels.

Desirable
  • Ability to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post
