Job summary
We are seeking applications from practitioner psychologists within Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT) to contribute to teaching on the MSc Foundations of Clinical Psychology and Mental Health at the University of Sussex. This will be a one year fixed term 0.2 wte secondment. The role is an SPFT employment but working at the University of Sussex.

Main duties of the job
Clinical skills teaching focuses on helping MSc students develop the core interpersonal and therapeutic abilities that underpin psychological work. Sessions include skills such as active listening, empathy, collaborative questioning, formulation thinking, and responding to distress. Teaching is experiential and practice-focused, using demonstrations, structured role-plays, and reflective discussion. Teaching is co-delivered with a Lived Experience educator, Helen Leigh-Pippard, supporting students to learn how psychological professionals work collaboratively, compassionately, and ethically with people experiencing mental health difficulties.

We welcome applications from practitioner psychologists who:

• Have a good understanding of the work of clinical psychologists and of routes into clinical psychology training
• Have some experience and interest in teaching supervision and training especially around the development of clinical skills
• Have experience of working professionally with people with lived experience
• Experience of working within a university setting is welcome but not essential

About us
The programme is led by Prof Kate Cavanagh and provides an academically rigorous and practice-informed foundation for students considering careers in clinical psychology and related mental health professions.

This role involves contributing to the clinical skills teaching within the MSc programme, supporting students to develop foundational competencies relevant to psychological practice. It will also involve evaluation of these competences and marking of relevant course work related to the clinical skills module.

Job responsibilities
To provide a professional leadership role for education and training across the Psychological Professions (PP) in SPFT. The person in this role will join the Director and Associate Director of PP in the central PP directorate.

The work will include responsibilities within PP E&T activities. This secondment post is to provide clinical skills training on the MSc in Foundations of Clinical Psychology and Mental Health at the University of Sussex. The post-holder will be expected to take full responsibility for the design, management and delivery of their own teaching. The postholder will need a good understanding of Clinical Psychology training and maintain a close relationship with university partners.

The postholder utilise research skills for audit, service development and research within education and training of PP and maintain and develop relationships with training providers.

Qualifications
Essential

• Post-graduate doctoral level training in applied psychology as approved by the HCPC, including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology
• Significant post-qualification experience delivering specialist psychological assessment and intervention for clients with complex needs.
• Post-qualification experience as a practitioner psychologist with approximately 50 hours of clinical supervision.

Desirable

• Lived experience of mental health issues
