Job summary
Breast Care Nurse - 22.50 hours per week (3 days per week)

The post holder will deliver a high standard of specialist nursing care within the Breast Service and will work closely with the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) to ensure excellence in care for all patients within the specialty. The role will involve both unit-based and clinic-based working.

The post holder will support the CNS by providing professional advice to members of the multidisciplinary team and contributing to the development of staff knowledge and skills. This will help ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care and the achievement of agreed specialty performance targets.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be based within the unit and department, working closely with staff as a positive role model. They will deliver high-quality clinical care and maintain regular liaison with the Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) and Lead Nurse to ensure seamless, coordinated patient care.

The role includes management of a defined patient caseload across both the inpatient unit and outpatient department (OPD).

The post holder will attend and contribute to independent, nurse-led pre-operative assessment clinics and, in line with agreed competencies, breast guidelines, and under the remit of the CNS, will obtain consent from patients undergoing breast surgery. This will include providing expert advice and information on breast reconstruction options and facilitating referrals to Plastic Surgery services where appropriate.

The post holder will actively participate in the MDT discharge programme, ensuring patients are discharged safely and appropriately in accordance with agreed criteria, assessments, and outcome measures.

Close liaison with the wider multidisciplinary team and Oncology Services will be required to support coordinated care throughout the patient pathway.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • RN or relevant part of NMC register (RSCN, RMN) with minimum of 5 years' experience post registration
Desirable
  • Health Assessment of the Adult Degree level study
  • Recognised accredited course in breast care
  • Recognised training re Lymphoedema care
  • Recognised oncology course
  • Educated to 1st degree or agreement to complete within 3 years of appointment
  • Recognised teaching / assessing / monitoring course

Knowledge
Essential
  • Completion of medical tattooing competency, or willingness to complete on appointment
  • Knowledge of current clinical developments and professional issues affecting nursing/midwifery
  • Skilled practitioner
  • Understanding of DGOH agendas, and other developments
  • Committed to personal self-development
  • Aware of clinical standards of National Service Frameworks
  • Knowledge of involving patients in service development
  • Knowledge of the relevance of governance and risk management within clinical practice
  • IT user skills, including knowledge of Microsoft Office Systems
Desirable
  • Knowledge of audit/research methodologies

Experience
Essential
  • Evidence of professional development and regular study since qualification.
  • A minimum of 6 months recent experience within a Breast Care Setting.
Desirable
  • Evidence of prosthetic fitting competence
  • Evidence of knowledge of lymphoedema and treatment.
  • Advanced communication skills
  • Experience of breaking bad news and counselling patients accordingly.
  • Evidence of ability to teach & assess
  • Evidence of prosthetic fitting competence
  • Evidence of knowledge of lymphoedema and treatment.

Communication
Essential
  • Experience of team working
  • Able to act as patient advocate
  • Able to liaise with members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Able to establish effective communication systems
  • Skilled in verbal and written communication including presentation skills
