A little about the role
We're looking for a Senior Biomedical Scientist to join our Microbiology team at The London Clinic in Central London. Our department covers bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, serology and molecular microbiology, supporting the diagnosis and treatment of patients across the hospital. You'll combine practical laboratory work with day-to-day supervision, helping coordinate workloads, support colleagues and ensure accurate, timely results. Working alongside the laboratory manager and other senior staff, you'll also contribute to staff development, quality improvement and the introduction of new tests and equipment. Our laboratory is UKAS accredited to ISO 15189:2022 and IBMS approved for registration training. We use a range of diagnostic technologies, including automated blood culture, organism identification and susceptibility testing, MALDI-TOF, serology and molecular platforms.

What you'll be doing:

• Performing and overseeing diagnostic testing, reviewing and authorising results within your competence.
• Coordinating daily workloads and supporting staff to prioritise urgent investigations.
• Training and mentoring colleagues and contributing to competency assessment.
• Supporting quality assurance, investigating problems and following through on corrective actions.
• Reviewing procedures and contributing to verification studies and service improvements

What are we looking for?

• HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist.
• Broad experience in diagnostic microbiology, using manual and automated laboratory methods.
• Experience of supervising staff and coordinating laboratory workloads.
• Experience of technical validation and authorisation of results, troubleshooting and recognising findings requiring escalation.
• Working knowledge of laboratory quality procedures and ISO 15189:2022.
• Clear communication skills and the ability to prioritise urgent work and manage competing demands.

You'll join our Microbiology team, providing diagnostic services across bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, serology and molecular microbiology. We work closely with clinical colleagues to support patient care across The London Clinic, including oncology, haematology and intensive care. As a senior member of the team, you'll help colleagues develop their skills and contribute ideas to improve the service.
