Description

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Consultant Paediatric Haematologist
The closing date is 19 November 2026

Job summary
We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.

This is a substantive post in paediatric haematology with responsibilities in caring for children with malignant as well as non-malignant haematological disorders. The Great North Children's Hospital provides specialist paediatric haematology service across a large area encompassing the North East and North West of England, with most of the care being delivered centrally.

Newcastle is a Principal Treatment Centre (PTC) for paediatric malignant haematology, as well as the regional non-malignant haematology and haemoglobinopathy centre with a designated Specialist Haemoglobinopathy Team. It is a high prevalence area for sickle cell disorder with a sickle newborn screening programme. Over the last five years, there has been a rapid growth in haemoglobinopathy patients within the region and referrals are continuing to rise requiring significant development of the service.

Main duties of the job
The post will help to develop the regional paediatric haematology service after centralisation of services into one department based in the Great North Children's Hospital. This follows expansion of patient numbers and will allow consolidation of consultant areas of interest both in malignant and non-malignant haematology.

Haemostasis and Thrombosis services are provided by the adult haematology team in Royal Victoria Infirmary and are not included in the paediatric haematology service.
