Job summary
The post offers excellent exposure to high volume, complex trauma within a regional Major Trauma Centre, with opportunities to develop operative experience and independent decision making in preparation for consultant practice. The RVI manages both paediatric and adult trauma, treating around 100 open fractures per year and 30-40 pelvic injuries. The unit also offers exposure to limb reconstruction, including circular frame application and management with opportunities for hands on involvement in deformity correction, bone loss, and complex trauma reconstruction.

This post is available from February 2027 for 6 months, with possible extension.

Main duties of the job
Clinical:

• Operative management of a wide range of orthopaedic trauma cases with a mixture of supervised and independent operating.
• Contribution to trauma rounds, complex trauma clinic and weekly trauma MDT meeting.

Administrative:

• Accurate and timely completion of clinical documentation and operative records.
• Active participation in service development, clinical governance, and audit activities.

Research:

• Participation in ongoing trauma-related research projects within the department.
• Opportunity to initiate and lead research, quality improvement, or audit projects with the aim of presentation and publication.

Teaching:

• Involvement in the teaching and supervision of resident doctors and medical students.
• Participation in departmental teaching programmes.

Job responsibilities
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated post-CCT surgeon with strong experience in orthopaedic trauma and a keen interest in major trauma care. They will demonstrate advanced clinical skills in major trauma management, sound decision making in high pressure environments, and a commitment to multidisciplinary teamworking. They will have relevant experience in orthopaedic trauma, excellent communication skills, and a proactive approach to teaching, research, and service development.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential

• Primary Medical Qualification.
• Full GMC registration.
• Post CCT Trauma & Orthopaedics and on GMC specialist register at time of commencing post.
• Current ATLS certification (or equivalent)

Clinical Skills and Knowledge
Essential

• NHS experience.
• Good history & examination skills.
• Able to formulate a working diagnosis.
• Able to order appropriate investigations.
• Image interpretation relevant to practice.
• Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague.

Management and Administration Experience
Essential

• Ability to run a service and participate in management process.
• Committed to share in professional, managerial and teaching responsibilities necessary to fulfil the obligations of the Directorate to the Trust and its workforce.
• Able to communicate well with patients and colleagues.
• An understanding of Clinical Governance.

Desirable

• Proven management and administration ability.
• Understanding of management goals.
