Main duties of the jobThis Fellowship Programme is designed to provide you with experience in Paediatric Intensive Care and the transport of critically ill children. This post is suitable for clinicians keen to enhance their paediatric critical care skills and knowledge to complement their chosen career path, as well as preparing interested applicants for a career in PICM to be excellent, ambitious clinicians and leaders.

Job responsibilitiesPaediatric Intensive CareThe roster generally includes two registrars on each day shift, one on the night shift.The main clinical duties are undertaken under the supervision of a consultant and include:
- Attendance at and contribution to daily ward rounds/handovers
- Assessment, admission and management of critically ill children
- Lead resuscitations and emergency care
- Post-operative management of neurosurgical, orthopaedic, ENT, general surgical patients, bone marrow and kidney transplant recipients
Increased responsibility and autonomy will be granted to more experienced trainees as they progress.
North East Childrens Transport and Retrieval (NECTAR)This post will involve participation in the NECTAR rota in and out of hours, again with increasing responsibility and autonomy as experience is gained.
Person SpecificationEducation and QualificationsEssential- Primary medical qualification.
- Full GMC registration with a licence to practise at time of application.
- 2 years' experience at specialist registrar level or equivalent in an acute speciality; paediatrics, anaesthesia, emergency medicine or paediatric surgery.
Desirable- Experience in critical care. This can be in a Level 3 neonatal unit or paediatric intensive care unit, or an adult intensive care unit.
- Experience in Paediatric Anaesthesia (for anaesthetic applicants).
- APLS provider or equivalent.
Clinical Skills and KnowledgeEssential- Good history & examination skills.
- Able to formulate a working diagnosis.
- Able to order appropriate investigations.
- Image interpretation relevant to practice.
- Knows when to appropriately seek assistance from a senior colleague.
Desirable- Technical skills : -Airway management including intubation -Ultrasound guided line insertion
- NHS experience.
Maintaining Clinical CompetenceEssential- Written evidence of satisfactory training to date e.g. workplace assessments.
TeachingEssential- Experience of teaching undergraduate medical students & Foundation Doctors.
Clinical Governance, Audit and ResearchEssential- Experience of audit projects.
