Job summary

Job overview
In our Elderly Medicine team at Princess Alexandra Hospital, we have 2 fixed term posts we are looking to recruit into. One post until end of December 2026 and the other until May 2027. These are great opportunities for experienced medics to expand their knowledge and development in a Specialty Doctor role with Geriatrics, a service that is developing and growing in line with the Government 10 year plan to support the care of our Elderly and Frail Community.

Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will jointly be responsible for supervising Care of the Elderly ward in-patients and junior doctors, outpatient clinics and ward referrals from other firms (with consultant supervision). The successful applicant will take part in the acute medical take rota. Full induction from both a corporate and local perspective will be provided.

Job description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post operates at the Specialty doctor level and offers excellent experience Elderly Medicine.

The post holder will work closely with the medical team and wider multidisciplinary clinical team in his/her area of work to deliver high quality patient care. The post holder will also support the consultant in driving forward service improvements according to the changing and increasing needs of the population.

The post holder will report directly to the consultant in their area.

Responsibilities
  • To co-ordinate high quality person-centred care of the patients on the ward, ensuring that all patients admitted have a diagnosis and treatment plan, and receive a daily medical review. To participate in outpatient clinics where required.
  • To provide senior medical leadership on the ward by supporting and supervising more junior staff and delegating duties appropriately.
  • To ensure the appropriate discharge of patients, including providing timely paperwork to the General Practitioner ensuring a continuation of care following discharge.
  • To actively participate in any appropriate steering or project groups.
  • To build and maintain excellent relationships with all members of the multidisciplinary team, working with them and communicating effectively to deliver high quality patient care.
  • To engage fully in development of services, driving forward innovations to meet the anticipated future challenges of the ageing population.
  • The post holder will be a member of the Divisional Team and will be expected to participate in the activities of the directorate as indicated.

and Research
To assist in teaching medical students from the Royal London Hospital attached to the firm from time to time and to participate in the Directorate Audit programme and to prepare and present their own audit project. We have an exceptionally well run Postgraduate Medical Centre with a full spectrum of training opportunities for every grade of doctor as well as support to access electronic learning resources. To participate in weekly departmental teaching sessions.

The post holder has a statutory obligation to attend all mandatory training. This includes; Health & Safety, Manual Handling, Fire Training, Information Governance, Safeguarding and Customer Care.

Monthly half-day audit meetings are held within protracted time as designated by the regional timetable. Attendance at all meetings listed is compulsory. Failure to attend at least 70% of the meeting could have a direct effect on the amount of study leave allocated.

There is a weekly Grand round and all clinical staff are encouraged and expected to attend. There is also a separate Geriatric journal club.

Person Specification

Qualifications
Essential
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register in geriatric medicine or eligibility for specialist registration in geriatric Medicine within 6 months from the time of the interview
  • PACES
  • Has a thorough knowledge and understanding of Good Medical Practice from the GMC and meets its requirements

Desirable
  • Valid ALS or equivalent

Experience
Essential
  • Broad knowledge and experience of Geriatric Medicine and UK Acute Medicine and Ambulatory Care in UK Evidence of personal practice in all areas described by the RCP curriculum.
  • Understanding of principles of clinical governance
  • Ability to demonstrate personal continuing personal development
  • Experience of guideline appraisal
  • Participation in relevant audits
  • Ability to interpret and apply clinical research
  • An interest that improves the core clinical service for patients requiring Geriatric Medicine care.
  • Experience of literature appraisal and report writing
  • Understanding of patient safety and risk management

Desirable
  • Evidence of implementing relevant evidence based medicine
  • Implementation of evidence based guidelines
  • Participation in relevant national audits
  • Recent published clinical research in peer reviewed journal
  • Experience in teaching at multiple levels and across disciplines
