Job summary
To work as a member of the acute Nutrition and Dietetic Team to facilitate and deliver a comprehensive, clinically effective dietetic service across a range of inpatient and outpatient settings. There may also be an opportunity to develop and apply knowledge within more specialist areas in line with demand, experience and ability.To be a source of evidence based nutritional information to other health professionals.To assist in the provision of training for dietetic students once student supervisory training has been completed.To support Dietetic Assistants through clinical supervision and day to day work.

Main duties of the job

• To develop, monitor, review and adjust dietetic care plans against outcome measures including biochemical status, clinical symptoms, anthropometric measurements, and compliance to facilitate achievement of goals.
• To work effectively as an individual and as part of a wider multi-disciplinary and Dietetic team.
• To develop and apply a working knowledge in specialist areas (this might include renal, oncology and haematology, gastroenterology, critical care, stroke, home enteral feeding, community) as the opportunity arises and under the supervision and support of a senior dietitian.
• To facilitate discharge planning and to liaise with other agencies as appropriate; e.g. community nursing staff, GPs and care homes and care-givers.
• To accommodate changing demands of the job by providing cover as necessary during staff absences and adapting practices as new evidence and ways of working evolve.
• Ensure that resources are used effectively and in accordance with departmental guidelines and standards.
• Develop close working relationships with the catering department to ensure correct provision of therapeutic diets to inpatients on assigned wards.
• To oversee the work delegated to Dietetic Assistants and support them as necessary.
• To participate in ward rounds and multi-disciplinary meetings with support from specialist Dietitians as required.
• To actively participate in departmental and team meetings to facilitate improving practices and developing the service.

Qualifications/training and professional development
Essential

• An undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or similar non-UK qualification
• Dietitian registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

Desirable

• British Dietetic Association (BDA) membership

Experience

• Experience of working within an NHS Dietetic Department

Skills, abilities and knowledge
Essential

• Able to use behaviour change/motivational interviewing skills to support implementation of dietetic treatment plans
• Able to utilise a range of resources to enhance communication if required e.g. use of an interpreter, visual aids
• Work well as part of a team and is able to demonstrate a good understanding about how teamwork can be used to deliver high-quality patient care
• Demonstrate an awareness and basic knowledge of national clinical and professional policies, guidelines and procedures, e.g. NICE;/BDA/HCPC Code of Conduct/Ethics, Health and Safety, Infection Control, Equality and Diversity, Confidentiality, Data Protection
