An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and enthusiastic Paediatric Sister/Charge Nurse to join our Paediatric Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (PUECC). We are looking for a highly motivated Children's Nurse with a passion for delivering outstanding urgent and emergency care and leading others to achieve the highest standards of practice.

PUECC provides assessment, treatment and ongoing care for children and young people aged 0-16 years presenting with a wide range of acute illnesses, injuries and emergency conditions. As a Paediatric Sister/Charge Nurse, you will play a key role in coordinating a clinical area, supporting patient flow, managing clinical risk and ensuring the delivery of safe, effective and compassionate care.

You will be a visible clinical leader and role model, supporting and developing staff, students and the wider multidisciplinary team. Working alongside senior nursing and medical colleagues, you will contribute to service development, quality improvement initiatives, clinical governance activities and the ongoing enhancement of patient and family experience.

Main duties of the job
As a Paediatric Sister/Charge Nurse within the Paediatric Urgent and Emergency Care Centre (PUECC), you will provide visible clinical leadership within a fast-paced and dynamic environment, ensuring children, young people and their families receive safe, compassionate and high-quality care. You will support the day-to-day coordination of the department, lead by example and work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to maintain high standards of patient care and experience.

This role is ideal for an experienced Children's Nurse who enjoys managing complex clinical situations, supporting and developing others, and driving continuous improvement. You will play an important role in creating a positive learning culture, supporting staff wellbeing, and contributing to service development and quality improvement initiatives that enhance patient outcomes.

Qualifications
Essential

• Evidence of continuing professional development and NMC revalidation
• Practice Assessor/Mentor qualification
• Advanced Paediatric Life Support (APLS/EPALS) or equivalent, or willingness to undertake
• Immediate Life Support qualification relevant to role (PILS)
• Safeguarding Children Level 3 Training

Desirable

• Level 1 Trauma Training
• Level 2 Trauma Training (TNCC or equivalent)
• Leadership or Management qualification

Knowledge
Essential

• Knowledge of NMC Code, professional accountability and scope of practice
• Knowledge of Paediatric emergency care pathways and escalation processes
• Knowledge of safeguarding children procedures including CPIS
• Understanding of clinical governance, risk management and incident reporting
• Knowledge of local, regional and national policies, practices and procedures e.g. NHS national policies, standards, requirements and directions that relate to Paediatric nursing and emergency care.

• Current level one NMC registration Registered Nurse

Experience
Essential

• Experience of working in an emergency department environment covering both triage and resuscitation
• Significant post-registration experience within paediatric urgent, Emergency or acute care
• Experience in MDT working
• Experience of triage and assessment of acutely ill or injured children
• Experience caring for deteriorating and critically ill children
• Ability to prioritise workload in a rapidly changing environment
• Ability to coordinate and manage a clinical area
• Excellent communication and record keeping skills
• Ability to teach, supervise and support staff and learners
• Able to demonstrate up to date competencies in patient assessment skills e.g. vital signs
• Is competent in paediatric venepuncture
• Dexterity and accuracy in undertaking clinical skills, use of equipment and documentation

Desirable

• Is competent in paediatric intravenous therapy
