Job summary
The post holder will be based in the Head & Neck Unit (Medical Oncology) under the supervision of Prof Chris Nutting, Research Lead for the Head & Neck Unit. The post is cross site at the Sutton site and Chelsea sites of the Royal Marsden. The consultants on the team are Prof Kevin Harrington, Dr Shree Bhide, Dr Kate Newbold, Dr Kee Wong and Dr Ben O'Leary. In order to fulfil the responsibilities of this post, the appointee will be required to demonstrate that they have experience in the medical oncological management of Head & Neck cancers.

Main duties of the job
The post-holder will develop his/her own area of expertise during the tenure of the post. The tenure of the post is expected to be for 12 months with a view to extend for a further 12-24 months. In order to maintain clinical experience, post-holder will be expected to attend out-patient clinics but will have no routine in-patient or on call duties.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Eligible for full GMC Registration
  • Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians (MRCP) or equivalent

Experience
Essential
  • ST3 or above level of experience in full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a parttime or flexible basis) at least one of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
  • One year of medical oncology experience
  • Experience in the management of acute medical emergencies and, practical interventions e.g. chest drains, central lines etc.
  • Experience in general oncology management including treatment of oncological emergencies and chemotherapy.
  • Experience of working with other systemic cancer therapies
  • Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and manage junior doctors
  • Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems; able to prioritise clinical need.
  • Motivated to ensure the achievement of defined targets
  • Is up to date and fit to practise safely

Desirable
  • Interest in head & Neck cancers. It would be helpful for the applicant to have some research experience and knowledge of cancer clinical trials.

Skills
Essential
  • All applicants able to demonstrate skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues
  • Good communications skills, ability to work as part as a team, take initiative and make decisions.

Desirable
  • Basic knowledge and interest in head & neck cancers

  • Able to work on both sites if necessary (Chelsea and Sutton) and to be flexible to meet the needs of the role
