Job summary
The Musculoskeletal Imaging fellowship at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is a 12-month appointment will embrace all aspects of musculoskeletal imaging including MRI, CT, ultrasound and musculoskeletal intervention.

The successful candidate will receive a broad exposure to musculoskeletal and spinal imaging including bone tumour and sports injury imaging.

There are two fellowship positions available.

This is a whole time radiology post based at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. This post is aimed primarily at post CCT radiologists looking to improve their knowledge and skills in Musculoskeletal Imaging prior to application for a substantive consultant post

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Main duties of the job
The fellow will participate in an intensive training program in all aspects of musculoskeletal imaging which includes plain film radiographs, MRI, MR arthrography, CT, ultrasound and image guided percutaneous biopsy. There will also be an opportunity to gain experience in image guided spinal intervention including cementoplasties and assist with radiofrequency and cryoablation cases.

Job responsibilities
There are 4 all day general anaesthetic lists undertaken within the imaging department primarily for bone and soft tissue biopsy, spinal interventional cases, vertebroplasty and cementoplasty service for the treatment of both osteoporotic disease as well as skeletal metastatic disease. There is an established radiofrequency ablation service for the treatment of various benign conditions. This service treats primarily primary osteoid osteomas although the service is developing to take on other primarily benign bone conditions. A Cryotherapy service was also set up in 2021.

Wide varieties of Ultrasound diagnostic and therapeutic joint injections are performed including both spine and joint. Significant numbers of diagnostic root blocks are undertaken together with some facet joint blocks as well as diagnostic joint injections of particularly the foot and ankle region. The fellow will be expected to participate in USGI lists.

There will be opportunities to attend weekly Musculoskeletal MDT meetings, Sarcoma MDT and Spinal Orthopaedic MDT.

The fellow will also be expected to participate in reporting of MSK examinations.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in research and audit with a view to presentation at national/international meetings and publication. Full support facilities including a shared office and computer will be provided together with some secretarial support.

It is anticipated that the successful candidate will produce publications during their period in post and contribute to radiological scientific meetings.

Qualifications

• Full GMC registration
• FRCR

Experience

• Experienced in full range of diagnostic radiology including CT, MRI, US, fluoroscopy and plain film reporting.
• Experienced in musculoskeletal MRI and US.

Desirable

• Extensive post CCT experience

Knowledge

• Training in general and MSK imaging including MRI, ultrasound and interventional techniques.

Desirable

• Varied experience in diagnostic MSK Ultrasound
• Varied experience in MSK intervention, including vertebroplasty and radiofrequency ablation,

Skills

• Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other health professionals.
• Able to work with colleagues in a team.
• Ability to respond to change

Desirable

• Leadership skills appropriate to participating in and leading a multidisciplinary team

Other

• Evidence of participation in clinical audit
• Presentations and/or publications on Imaging topics especially musculoskeletal imaging

Desirable

• Specialist orthopaedic oncology interest (diagnostic and intervention)
• Involvement in teaching and training of radiology SpR's
