Job summary
The BMBS Stage 4 Lead - Torbay provides visible, credible and student-focused leadership for Stage 4 of the Peninsula Medical School undergraduate medical programme. The postholder will support students throughout their clinical training, lead and support Academic Tutors, respond to feedback on the student experience, and contribute to a high-quality, coherent and contemporary educational programme in collaboration with University and clinical partners.

Main duties of the job

• Provide leadership for the Stage 4 student experience at Torbay, ensuring students receive consistent, responsive and high-quality support throughout their clinical training.
• Lead and support the Academic Tutor model, including guidance, communication, cover arrangements and support with complex student issues.
• Maintain oversight of Stage 4 teaching, placement activity, assessment requirements, student support processes and key academic year milestones.
• Contribute to curriculum quality, student feedback, programme evaluation, governance, assessment activity and continuous improvement processes.
• Work closely with Programme Leadership, Directors of Undergraduate Medical Education, Education and Placement Leads, Clinical Liaison Services, Academic Tutors and clinical colleagues.
• Contribute to Student Huddles, Academic Review Group meetings, professionalism assessments, BMBS Programme Committee meetings and other relevant governance forums.
• Support educational supervision of Clinical Teaching Fellows and contribute to teaching and assessment activity, including MSA and AMK question setting, Angoff standard-setting, OSCE development and patient recruitment.

Person Specification
Essential

• Senior medical staff member with regular clinical commitments.
• Permanent substantive senior medical contract at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
• Recognised medical education qualification, or willingness to gain one within two years.
• Sound understanding of medical education, undergraduate clinical training and GMC regulatory requirements.
• Proven leadership experience in medical or healthcare education, including involvement in curriculum development, teaching, learning and student support.
• Evidence of engagement with medical education research, educational scholarship or innovation in teaching and learning.
• Awareness of national and international trends in medical education and NHS/higher education collaboration.
• Experience of providing academic and pastoral support to undergraduate and/or postgraduate learners.
• Excellent communication, leadership, influencing and collaborative working skills across multidisciplinary, academic and clinical teams.
• Ability to provide sensitive academic and pastoral support, manage complex student issues appropriately and escalate concerns in line with policy.
• Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion in education and student support.
• Demonstrates self-leadership, develops self and others, operates effectively in times of change and ambiguity, builds effective relationships, drives innovation and action, contributes to a shared vision and uses sound judgement.
• Ability to work flexibly across University and NHS environments, including attendance at key School meetings and travel across the South West where required.

Desirable

• Higher qualification in medical education, clinical education, leadership or equivalent relevant area.
• Experience of assessment activity such as question setting, standard setting, OSCE development or patient recruitment.
• Previous experience working across NHS and higher education partnership arrangements.
